20+ years ago a coworker bought a used Mercedes and sold it in two years because every time it went in the shop the bill was at least $1k.
 
My advice on another forum to someone who had only owned Toyotas but now wanted a particular BMW SUV was...lease.

That model had terrible reliability ratings out-of-warranty, so why not enjoy it for awhile but then let it be somebody else's problem?

For most 'toys' it's better to rent than buy.
