Here's my latest numbers, updated this morning:

+0.23% on 1/31/2020.
-6.78% on 2/28/2020.
-21.45% on 3/31/2020.
-13.31% on 4/30/2020.
-8.82% on 5/29/2020.
-6.56% on 6/30/2020.
-2.32% as of 7/31/2020.
+2.99% as of 8/31/2020.
-0.89% as of 9/30/2020.

As for highs and lows of the year, I peaked at 4.67% on February 19, and bottomed out at -30.47% on March 23. I did briefly hit a new peak, of 4.70%, on September 2, but as the month's closeout shows, that was short-lived.

Interestingly, I saw an article that mentioned this September was the worst September since 2011. But, this September just doesn't stick in my mind as being all that bad, although looking at my own numbers, I'm down almost 3.9%.

The last time I saw a decline in September was 2015, where I dropped about 3% for the month. I dropped about 2.5% in September 2014. Back in 2011, around that timeframe, the only data points I saved were 7/7/11, where I hit a new all-time high, 8/8/11, where I bottomed out down with roughly a 14% drop, and then 9/30/11, where I was up barely, like 0.3%. On 9/30/11, I started saving only month-end data, so it was easier to compare from year to year. Prior to that, i'd only save extremes, so the graph would show the absolute highs and lows of any given trend.

So, I guess it's possible that late August of 2011 saw some serious improvement from August 8, going into September, and then dropped? And, considering I had just lost 14+% in a bit over a month, maybe because of that, whatever September of that year did, just doesn't register with my memory?

Haven’t changed a thing as far as AA. Down a bit for the month but still up 2% for the year. I prefer the slow and steady approach.

Still in the plus column: +1.6% (all-in, spend adjusted, 67/33). I consider myself a winner, considering where we were at the end of March (-14%). As the market seems to be disjointed from the economy at the moment, I wouldn't be surprised if the two didn't align more closely soon, and we end the year in the minus column. But of course I hope not!

Oh, I like this way of presenting your numbers! Here are mine, presented the same way but done the first week in each month:

Jan +1.83%
Feb +0.27%
Mar +0.06%
Apr -8.36%
May +4.91%
Jun +3.66%
Jul +0.98%
Aug +2.50%
Sep +2.37%
Oct -2.09%
(overall from Jan 1 through Oct 1: +3.73%)
(and from Oct 1, 2019 through Oct 1, 2020: +8.34%)

These are for my portfolio plus bank accounts. Bear in mind that I am living off of these accounts, and that I also get deposits from SS and my three figure mini-pension each month so these help to boost the numbers.

While these percentages may not be strictly comparable to others' percentages, for me they are meaningful because I will be determining my withdrawal amounts from a similar total, once I have calculated it for 12/31/2020.

For purposes of comparison, if we simply must, just my taxable Vanguard accounts alone (with no deposits or withdrawals) were:

Jan +2.00%
Feb +0.52%
Mar -0.42%
Apr -9.57%
May +5.62%
Jun +4.33%
Jul +1.13%
Aug +2.86%
Sep +2.57%
Oct -2.17%

(overall from Jan 1 through Oct 1: +4.12%)
(and from Oct 1, 2019 through Oct 1, 2020: +9.28%)

My equities only swung about 30% in March, and a steady rise through August, but my equity investment is basically a total market index. My bond fund has out performed my equities as of September 30.

Retirement portfolio YTD through Q3 2020 6.15% vs. 3.24% for benchmark VTHRX (Vanguard Target Date 2030).

Stock/bond allocation mirrors VTHRX (currently ~68/32).

I have a question just for learning purposes only.

- 2.87% for September, 2020 is this % from the start of September to the last day of September?? If so wouldn't you use one month (Moneychimp) instead of 12 month YTD to come up with a one month gain or loss??

Just a question not wanting to start any problems. Thanks!

Still up 6.2% YTD. AA target 55/45.

All in. Spend adjusted.

That is correct. -2.87% is only for September 1 thru September, 30, 2020
+4.41% YTD is from January 1, 2020 thru September 30, 2020 (includes all dividends reinvested).

Thanks,
Rick

^ thanks. We are very close in YTD numbers but when I do just the month of September I beleive I'm negative ~ 26%. If I do YTD (MoneyChimp) just on September my numbers are ~ the same as yours in negative territory ~ -2%.

Thanks and -2% looks a lot better then -26%.

-26% for September, 2020 seems too much.....because S&P500 only dropped -4.91% and total US markets dropped -3.81% in September, 2020. The only way your portfolio dropped -26% last month could be because of some individual stocks that tanked BIG. Are you sure your portfolio dropped a quarter of its value last month?

You got me straightened right out. No, I miss calculated I'm in about the same negative range you are for the one month.

Sometimes I'm not sure how I got to where I am at today, with my poor math skills.

Thanks
