I like Greek culture yogurt, too. Plain, non-fat. When I bring it to work, people ask me how I can eat "that stuff". It is an acquired taste, like kimchee. The latter I DO NOT bring to work. One fellow I work with brought in bagna cauda. He was almost tarred and feathered. I joined him in eating it with relish...

We spend at lest $200 for in-home consumption of mostly fermented beverages, occasionally some distilled.

At first I included with food - but that made the food spending too high. I then classified as entertainment - but the wine consumption is too important to be assigned a category that can be cut so easily in a moment of spending control. I finally classified as health care - it meets all the criteria - and not only does it not stand out, it actually holds down the YTY growth.

I'll second this.

Our alcohol spending, for two people around 60: $0

My wife never drank, I got away from it as I got older.

We can hang out together!! But I also believe there are a few "good" wines under $10...below $7 and you are starting to gamble!

Caninelover, If you're a male, aged 25-34, you're about average.

These numbers are monthly "alcoholic beverages" from the consumer expenditure survey.

Age Single Female Single Male Two People
Under 25 . 27 56 41
25-34 45 88 63
35-44 37 55 43
45-54 23 46 53
55-64 19 51 49
65+ 9 26 33

These are "means", so they include people who spend $0.

Interesting. I suspect this is the kind of survey that people are more likely to lie about, not wanting to admit how much of a boozer they are they spend on something like alcohol.

About 3 months ago I started to follow Dr. Andrew Weil's advice to get healthier, link below. With that I got rid of all the hard stuff and wine, and 10 lbs. I limit myself to one six pack of high qualty micro brew per week, USA brewers only. It is usualy $32/month. This helps control the urge and it is fun. I also don't drink when I eat out - so its probibly close to a $50/month savings.

This is a rough guess... We probably average about $50 - 60/mo ($600 - $700 annually).

Low cost wine, beer, replenish liquor cabinet with a bottle or two of liquor through out the year, perhaps a cocktail when we eat out at nice restaurants. I stopped the happy hour thing in my late 30s.

That figure excludes money spent on vacations.

I prolly spend about $600 annually on brewing supplies and incidentals. On top of that I generally pick up a case of wine for $100 every other month and the occasional bottle of decent booze, so call it $150/month. But I get a huge subsidy from my brewhouse time, since I pay something like $3.50 a six pack equivalent for homebrew.

I was right on the money up until I had my 55th b'day just a month ago. Looks like I need to increase my consumption by $5/mo. Noooooo problem.

Nothing in winter, maybe a 12 pack every 2 weeks in the summer.

"0" for me but DW has been known to have a good Pulley Fuisse a few times a week. I think 100 bucks would cover it.

As I sit here with my margarita.....

I didn't really drink regularly until my two DD's became teenagers. Now that they are almost 18 and 20, I have found solace in my margaritas! And DH enjoys his Coors Lite (I know, not necessarily beer to many of you, but he enjoys it, and the calories are low!) I found that having children definitely increased my alcohol consumption.....

I don't know about the monthly cost - I'm guessing under $100 month (I'm behind on categorizing my credit card bills - once I get caught up, I'll be able to be more precise! I have a category on Quicken of "Wine and Booze", but often the beer gets lost in the grocery bill.)

Probably true. But note that the Consumer Expenditure Survey isn't one of those "look at the ceiling and guess" surveys. They give people a daily diary to record lots of detail. The biggest problem with the survey is probably fatigue.
