My 4 week retirement update:. In the past 4 weeks, we spent two of them in the forest and the past two in Dayton, Oh helping a daughter renovate/update her first house. It's been a great time even though we are on 'plan E'. We were originally going to go to Malwali with Peace Corps Response.. that is on hold indefinitely. Then we thought hiking the AT was going to be a good social distancing exercise...but the ATC doesn't want anyone on the trails or in shelters. Our plan C was to visit National Parks but they soon started closing. We made it two weeks in Pisgah N.F. in Western N.C. and Nantahala before selections were shut down and closed off. We were able to help my parents out for a few days (Pops has back problems, Parkinson's, and is increasingly less mobile.) Then my partner's middle daughter closed on her first house, so we've been able to tear up carpets, paint all the rooms, and make electrical and lighting updates for her.

It isn't what we had planned, but we have given ourselves and our family the 'gift of time'. Our accounts may be down around 300k, but we won't need to sell for another few years. I don't miss meetings. I don't miss the work. I miss the social aspects, of being around friends but I think we all do right now.

I'll check in again in a few months. Until then take care, and stay healthy!

Thank you.

Feels awesome to be free. Shut down at 5 after my last web teleconference, headed out the back gate, and currently hiking on my favorite gravel road down to a serene and isolated stretch of river.

It’s a slow walk as I thank the good lord for the blessings of a loving wife (married 33 years), a career that spanned 3 decades, and 3 kids who are young professionals pursuing their dream careers (engineer, nurse and physicist).

Cheers to all my class of 2020 brothers and sisters!

Congratulations to all in class of 2020.

I'm finishing my part time work on May 12 th. So glad to be retiring but it feels odd now with stay at home orders in my state. We had plans to be camp by mid May but that may not happen. Feeling a bit bored without the plans. Anyone else making new plans ?

Add me in July 1

Here is a link explaining what got me out. The first group retired yesterday and it now seems more real. Still have 8 weeks to go but the last 7 have been at home and that has been better. Not sure when or even if we will be back before then. Still a bit too far to imagine but I am starting to see nirvana approaching

Late notice to the 2020 club.

Retired April 16th and loving life!!!

Moved near the coast last July.

Days are filled with whatever comes up.

The best thing for me is that time is largely irrelevant now. Stay in the moment and soak up life.

COVID 19 has changed some things for us so, looking at 12/31. Still 2020 but a few months later. (watching and waiting).

Congrats to all of you who have already pulled the plug. My online teaching gig will still run out, but the University has delayed grade posting until May 19th, so I'm "working" 4 extra days as a result (I finished grading except for a few late assignment submissions).

I wish you all luck. Went on a 12 mile/2600 ft hike up Mt. Scott Thursday and plan on hiking/fishing most days beginning next week. Given the uncertainty of the pandemic, I'm glad I opted for online/half time option for 5 years to ease into the full retirement water, but I feel ready to take the plunge now. Only 4 years until full SS, but I've got 5 years worth of cash for withdrawals, so I think we're ready.

My Husband retired Saturday Unfortunately, due to COVID, graduation ceremonies for the University were cancelled. He was looking forward to marching for the final time. Since he was teaching on-line, there was no real closure or saying goodbye to colleagues. Very anticlimactic, but happy nonetheless!

I did a five week furlough recently because of the pandemic. I am back at work now for the next eight weeks, then out for good.

I was a little depressed at the beginning of the furlough for the same reasons as your husband. I thought all these years of work and it could end in an anticlimactic way.

Then I had an epiphany. I realized that the future held far more attraction than the past. Sure there was a touch of sadness in leaving a career, business I founded and some work friends behind, but after having a taste of retirement for just a few weeks, the joy, freedom and intoxicating feel of having the rest of my life ahead of me had far greater attraction.

I can move on now without regret, sadness or fear. The future is so freaking bright!

Due to sudden vacancies and changes in management i was talked into extending my retirement date to 31July2020 . My mind was already out the door and i figured it was way too late for anyone to suddenly start worrying about a lack of decisions about transitioning my responsibilities. But a sudden moment of weakness resulted in the little angel on my right shoulder winning the argument to do the right thing . So my count down clock has moved from 14 back to 58 more days. Hopefully this is just deja vu and not the movie groundhogs day . I try to think of this as doing something good for society (paying extra taxes, helping out a struggling organization, being a productive member of society). However my retired wife called me a sap . Hopefully the rest of you keep the faith and don't delay retirement so i can continue to live vicariously though you .
