Her Megacorp is offering ER packages (they want to cut head count). You know, number of years in service + age must equal 7x years. She is going to take it.

Severance pay, medical, dental... bunch of other benes.

I am very happy for her. She had one available a few years ago, but passed on it. I think she regretted it. She is really tired of all of the stress and B^LLsh!t.


Because this was a buyout package, she is being offered job replacement and some money for retraining. She is deciding if she want to go back to work (maybe part-time) after some time off or just retire all together. Anyway, I wonder if the retraining benefit offer will pay for Lessons to be a professional golfer .

New to this forum but it is these type of responses that make me realize I'm going to enjoy it here.

Who cares if she want to go back to work, take the retraining as it'll give her something to do in the interim

Good for her! I would have given anything for a nice fat package. My company was not in a headcount reduction mode, and they didn't want me to retire . . . would not have done one thing to give me any incentive to leave. Offered me opportunities to stay. I love that they held me in such high regard, but oh how I would have loved a package.

How does it impact your ER projections?

Great! My DW retired a year ago and loves it. She does 'work' maybe 4 hours a week, she enjoyes that. Have your wife take the retraing resources and learn Quicken/Excel to manage the family finances.
Then, if she is like my wife, the pressure will be on for you to retire.

what is the best way to approach the subject of being granted an ER package to your company's HR person? On one hand you would love to be offered one, on the other hand you don't want to appear overly anxious, which would tip them off of your desire and perhaps reduce or not receive one.

DW ER'd 3 years ago at age 49 and she absolutely loves it. Me too. It is great having her at home to do all the things that needed time off work to achieve, and more importantly to see her so much more relaxed.

Our ER target should not change. Mainly because the portfolio is close to the target amount.

She will miss 3 years of salary before she would have retired anyway. Of course, that additional money would have helped (because more is alway better in terms of saving) but it does not impact the projected ER date. It does not materially impact the projected yearly income in ER.

Nord's maybe available to help. But you really don't want to be a professional surfer, to much travel, stress, and it is a pain to find sponsors.
In others professional surfer=job=work and remember work is a four letter word around these parts.
