How Many Stocks Needed for Diversification?

If diversification in one's equity portfolio is a good idea, and one wants to pick their own stocks, then how many stocks are needed to achieve the benefits of diversification?

Ah some activity. Thanks for the new links. Shows even the experts (or at least a talented idiot with a web page -- which describes much of what you read on the Web, present company excluded of course < ) may disagree.

The strength of the web is that you get opposing views which anables you to make informed decisions. The bad thing is that it forces you to think for yourself.
