I crunched the numbers for flights and trains to get me from Rome to Hartford instead of Rome-Boston, without a rental car. The numbers just didn't make any sense, so I ended up driving.

Round trip Amtrak Boston/Hartford =$140!! That equals about four days of a cheap car rental...
In Europe the trains are cheaper, while the car rentals more expensive, so it makes more economic sense to take the train when possible.
