How much did you lose today?

Today, Dec. 11, the S&P was down 2.5%. I usually do a Quicken update each day and was curious how much I lost on paper. Today it was in excess of 10K, a little more than 11K to be exact. So I was curious how others did today. I have some friends that I am sure lost more than I did. I also have friends that if they knew I lost more than 10K in one day would think I am crazy (these are the ones that spend everything they make). So how did you do? Do we have any 100K swings for the day?

I'll know in the morning.

Should make for an interesting blip on my charts.

Within $200 of the amount I made yesterday. Once again thankful for my anti-dollar portfolio.

No idea. I only 'officially' check once per year before rebalancing, but I do ususally cheat and do a quick check every quarter or so.

As I'm still in the accumulation phase, I hope those down blips occur the day before my 401(k) contribution goes in.

<sigh> I was the one who asked in another thread about whether to dollar cost average or lump sump my money that I'm getting from the escrow company. I had access to it today... hmm, today would have been a good day to invest! But of course, I didn't!

I have to learn the art of "not looking at it" every day. I know this is a bad habit but right now I just can't seem to shake that.

I admire all of you guys that "ignore" what's going on in the market, just check quarterly, or yearly etc.

Gotta learn how to do that........anyway down 19K today but will probably get it back tomorrow!

Down $18K today. Not my worse day ever though and by now I'm numb to the swings up and down, so it's just a number. I don't even need a drink anymore when stuff like this happens.

About 30k, but have been up that much some days...

I "lost" about 5K today. Company stock dropped 5% today which didn't help.

About $7,000 on paper. But I don't pay the bills with paper gains and losses.

Funny thing is, I knew the Fed was supposed to announce at 2:15 PM Eastern time. So at that time I logged on to my Schwab account and kept refreshing the quote on SPY. It went from up 60 cents to up 20 cents to down 10 cents to down 60 cents to down $1.20 to down $2.00 and then some, which told me what the Fed did before I could find the news anywhere.

For most long-term investors, it's noise.

I keep track of my portfolio at Morningstar (50% bonds/50% Stocks). With bonds doing very well today, my portfolio decreased by only 0.90%.

Lost $4K today. My portfolio contains about 13% stock mutual funds.

Didn't look. Not planning to tomorrow.

For most long-term investors, it's noise.

It goes up....it goes down....it goes up....it goes down....like a roller coaster. It'll all work out in the end, and that's what's important. Not looking at the daily fluctuations is a hard thing to do at first.....but it CAN be accomplished with practice. ;)

Instead of looking to see what your stocks are doing, click on the "Solitaire" icon and play a game...then go back to what you were doing before you thought about getting a stock quote! :D

Down $144k today - REIT heavy at the moment, always 100% individual stocks. Looks like
I am winning so far, but no sweat. GE raised dividend 11% as expected, no change to
fundamentals. I have had a lot of $30k - $80k daily swings in the last few months, mostly
cancelling each other out. Since I live on the dividends, I see today as a non-event. Now
if GE / JNJ / PG / KIM / GGP / VNO / WRE start cutting dividends (or show signs of
doing so), then I will be concerned.

How do you all know this already? For many/most mutual funds you won't know until tomorrow. Not that it matters - you just rode rode up 600 pts in S&P in the last 3 days - now you're back to only up 300 pts? If you could tell me where we'll be in a month I'd be interested. Today.....

Owee. I feel your pain Cycling Investor, as we're down $1590 today. But Yay! up 2.21% for the week, thanks to stellar performance by Fording coal, which is up 11.64% this week! Which gives us a $77 dollar total earning on that stock since we've owned it! I think i'm not doing the stock market thing right.....

Quite a bit...... Thanks for asking. :p

I didn't lose anything....because I didn't sell...........:)
