I have a vague recollection that I may have posted previously on this board that insurance through IEEE has premiums that do not vary based on age. So I want to correct that. I just got some printed info in the mail on their insurance and it looks like it does in fact vary by age, but is more affordable than I had thought. They have an HSA plan with deductible 2500 in network/5000 out of network, and out of pocket max 5000 in/10000 out. The cost for that for a single person is $251/mo ages 30-39, increasing to $725 for 60-64, then down to $317 for 65-69 and $404 for 70+. You can only enroll if you are under 65 and IEEE member for 2 years prior to enrollment. As long as you meet those conditions they will enroll you no matter what your pre existing conditions are. There's a waiting period of 6-12 months for coverage for preexisting conditions, but HIPAA can waive that.

I looked at their health insurance a few years ago. I need to join.

Is it comparitively priced to an HDHP from ehealthinsurance? I pay $75/month so $250 wouldn't be worth it...until/unless I get sick.

eridanus, what are you quoting?

At any rate, you are quite right that IEEE insurance costs significantly more than insurance plans that reject people with preexisting conditions (like most if not all the plans on ehealthinsurane). It's only reasonably priced for people like myself who have preexisting conditions.

Their premiums through IEEE might be a good baseline for estimating "worst case" insurance costs in the event a condition arises and you lose insurance or your rates shoot way up. I'm guessing most professional engineering societies have a similar insurance plan? ASCE, ASME, ASChE?

Do they have family rates?

"Worst case" would be if you didn't belong to any groups (like IEEE) and you could expect to pay more than IEEE rates for worse coverage. For instance, check out the HIPAA plans at:

Looking at the IEEE rate sheets I got in the mail, the family rates seem to cost 3-5x as much as individual coverage. They also offer a non-HSA plan that costs about 25-35% more than the HSA plan.

Probably. But I'm an ASCE kinda guy. We get 2 lbs x 10^3 of chicks.

But assuming you're a member of some professional organization that has group health (a big IF?) then you could always fall back on that insurance if your regular carrier dropped you.
