In my case, when I retired, I figured out how much we would need annually to live in the lifestyle we wanted (low 6 figures in today's $$) for at least the next 30 years (inflation adjusted). (That is bucket #1) I then sat aside enough money to invest in fixed income instruments to generate that amount along with SS. The rest (bucket #2) is used for investments in stocks, collectables, and just extra fun money. Works for me.
