Gosh I love being provocative!

Re. "delusional", I hope not. But I do believe I can predict the "big picture"
in politics. It's all based on history though. Thus, although I have no idea where the Dow is headed,
nor who will be elected president, I am certain of
our long term fate in terms of government's intrusive
tendencies, and the sheep-like submission of most of our citizens.
I am not a mystic, just a close observer of history and
politics.

Hey John

Here's provocative - no. 2 pencil, WSJ or Barron's, - on the back of an envelope how close can you get me to $50/day with 300k with bonds recognizing you may have a higher risk tolarance than a lot of us.

O.k O.k. - REITs, preferred stock, and closed end bond funds if you can find them.

Today's interest environment makes this a real stretch for the risk adverse.

Re: Is now a good or bad time for bond funds

With 300K at work, you only need 6% (pretax)
to get your $50 per day. I am averaging in excess
of that without anything which I view as very risky. But,
I have steeled myself against future drops in market value of my bonds. I am hoping this will not happen, but will still sleep at night if it does. BTW, I have only
actually lived on $50 per day for short periods since I ERed. I've studied this issue until my head hurt though, so I know it is still
doable. Having a working spouse eases the pressure
a lot.

So what you need to to make 'your' personal ER work can have as much influance on bond stragety as timing the interest cycle? Anyone?

Re: Is now a good or bad time for bond funds

Hello unclemick and friends. Re. "What you need...........................influence", that's it for me.
Once I saw how much was required to get where
I wanted to be ER-wise, I designed a program to get
the income required with minimal risk. I would "fall on
my sword" before going back to work now. I was not really forced out of CDs and into bonds, but I might
have had to start dipping into principle for income.
Psychologically, I was not ready to do that. Of course,
in the big scheme of things (not knowing how long we
will be around) it may not mean anything. It's interesting to me how many "posters" on this site
are planning what they will be doing 5, 10, 20 years in
the future, seemingly with the assurance they will still
be here. Sorry to break the news, but the cemeteries
are full of people who had plans just like yours, and never got there. Sad but true.

Here is the best advice
you will get all day, direct from Paul Terhorst. "Decide what makes you happy and do it. Today!"

I always vote for the candidate who is going to provide a strong military, a clean environment, eliminate poverty, insure that everyone has adequate access to a high paying job, medical care, food, housing, education, etc., while also eliminating drug abuse, crime, and jaywalking. And most importantly, they will increase the taxes paid by the tooth fairy to pay for all of this.

Ted

All the things you mentioned are minor nits except for the military.

The benchmark is the long govt. bond rate - Berstein's going to explain it all for us May 2004 - The Birth of Plenty.

Govt. bonds drive everything! I've read some excepts on his website and may - I say may - buy the book.

I think Santa has what it takes to get elected. He employs the "physically challenged" in his workshop, and
gives away all of his production (very PC). He travels by
sleigh and reindeer which are easy on the environment.
He has been married to the the same woman for a very long time. Name recognition? Off the chart!
He is jolly and eats a lot of milk and cookies,
made right here in America, by Americans. He does
dress kind of funny though.

I think he might face charges of being a communist based on his disregard for wealth when he distributes gifts. The red suit won't help his cause as he trys to defend against these charges. Plus . . . there will be questions about what is in that pipe he smokes.

No, he'll never be elected. I'm afraid Santa can easily be labeled a subversive and his reputation smeared by any modern politician with lots of funding.

Re: Is now a good or bad time for bond funds

I'd say Santa is more like a Corporation. He has other people (little people) do the hard work. He expects the whole world to worship him as oh, so kind and good and benevolent. Attempts to extract certain behavior from people through monopoly power. Expects everybody to just accept what he gives them. Gives the people who already have the most the best, nicest, most expensive gifts.

Or perhaps he's a metaphor for Government. All powerful. All pervasive. Expects to be worshipped as oh so kind and benevolent. Attempts to extract certain behavior from people through monoply power. Expects everybody to just accept what he gives them. The people who already have the most get the best, nicest, most expensive gifts

Hello Larry Kudlow! I hope Santa was good to you, in
spite of your comparing him to the government. BTW,
good satire is best left to the experts .
