Net worth 30-40 year olds
What is your net worth for persons in their 30-40? I am 35 and have about 155k in a 401k, 19k in a Roth, 420k in real estate and a few cars worth about 25k. Overall probably around 550k total net worth.

You are doing good. I don't know what my NW was at your age. I had 401K equivalent account ~$125K-$200K at 35-40 years old that would be ~$180-$260K in today's dollars based on cost of living calculator.

You're doing good. I'm 49 and 15 years ago I only had 40k in my 401k and some cash in the bank. My house was paid off but I don't include my house or car in my net worth.

40 here, NW ~400k not including the $21k/year COLA'd "pension" I receive. Plan is to get that over $1M in the next 5-7 years and then retire. Living paycheck to paycheck in my 20's put a big damper on my net worth growth...

That was a while back but at 30, I probably had a negative NW. By the time I was 40 I'm sure my NW was positive but probably not by a lot (maybe 200 to 300k). It was the next 10 years (40 to 50) where I really started accumulating.

DS (age 32) just announced this past weekend that he and his DW's net worth just passed $500,000. In the OP's calculation of NW, I advise him not to include cars.

I was at $400k at 35 (1996), so you are ahead of me at your age. Net worth tumbled more than double this amount from 2009 to 2011 in what I call the dark years. The last five years have been a godsend for net worth recovery.

DW and I broke 7 figures on our 30s. Her company stock options were a large contributing factor.

I got lucky with the real estate market in 2009 when I bought a few cheap properties in California , otherwise I would only have the 401k. I guess a little bit of luck helps [emoji1]

I got lucky, did not start accumulating much before going into the Great Recession. Started working after grad school at 32 (2007) with $45k to our names plus $50k in house. Hit $1M net worth (including primary residence) a couple of months after turning 40.
42 now with ~$1M invested, $200k cash (for investment properties) and $80k rental equity.

Dude, be prepared to feel humbled, as this board has many. many folks that have accumulated enviable stashes at incredibly young ages.
At 35 (1998), I think I had about $300K in my 401K and another $20K in outside investments, making about $60k a year, so you are doing well.
I am at about $1.6 now, so when you are in your early 50's you should be well north of $2 million. Gratz!
