What are some decent no load alternatives to American Funds' AGTHX? I just found out that AGTHX has a 5.75 up front load and need another pick to contribute new money to in the future.

Merriman's "explode loads" suggests FFTYX
But why not do like everybody else and figure out an overall asset allocation and fill it up with low-cost index funds?

AGTHX has 10% fixed income, 19% foreign and the rest large cap US. In essence, that's a target retirement fund with a date of about 2040 to 2050. Compare to Vanguard's Target 2050: VFIFX

If you were originally interested in AGTHX because you needed a large-cap growth fund for your portfolio, then I would look for another large-cap growth fund. The as of April 30th 10.5% cash and equivalents position of AGTHX will move around over time, there is no requirement to have X percent as cash, it is up to the managers as they see fit with flow in and out of the fund, and market conditions.

Isn't VFIFX really a large cap blend fund with some fixed income?

AGTHX id a large cap GROWTH fund........similar asset class breakdown, WAY diiferent holdings. And yes, American holds significant cash when they see future buying opportunities.......AGTHX was almost 20% in cash right before the meltdown in 2000.............
