My wife had a mystery deposit from Social Security earlier this month. After a bit of investigation I figured out that they had recalculated her benefit and discovered that they had shorted her $22 per month. she had begun receiving payments in February and the amount was for exactly 9 months of shortfall. We received an updated benefit letter a few days ago with her new benefit amount.
In her case, she applied last October and her earnings record wasn't finished for 2020. They apparently based her benefit on her earnings to the time of application then corrected it for her earnings accrued after that (in 2020). Starting next month she will receive the new benefit amount.

Yesterday (5th of the month), he received what seems to be an additional payment in the form of 20% of his regular benefit.
While not too eager to question extra money on his behalf, I'm curious if anyone here might have a clue. The entry had the same verbiage as his regular check but the whole things sound a bit strange.
I checked the SS website and he's supposed to receive another regular payment mid-month but found no other information.
Any insight appreciated.
