Is it possible to have real estate be part of a self-directed IRA? Specifically, could you hold a second-home, vacation home, etc. in a rolled-over 401k that you are now managing in an IRA?

I haven't seen this covered anywhere, and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience/input in this area.

Thank you.

Yes and no.

Yes, you can include real estate in your IRA, but you have to find an IRA custodian that allows it, fees are high, and it can be tricky to make sure all rent, depreciation, etc flows through the IRA and you keep your hands off.

No, you can't shelter a second home, vacation home, or any relative's real estate. I think it has to do with restrictions on self-dealing.
