Reprting SS income on Taxes

This should be a quick question. DW will start SS this year. The SSA-1099 will show her total amount and amount deposited after Medicare deduction. Which number is used to compute income ? Looks to be the total amount before Medicare but wanted to ask.

You can't tell from the B&W image but they make it easy for you by color coding the right box a bright pink. It's the gray box in the link.

Then you have the calculation to determine how much of it is taxable.
