Social Security - File and Suspend

Can someone explain the file and suspend process in Social Security. When is it done, why is it done, and what is the advantage? How do you go about implementing the file and suspend process?

Yup. It is easy. See your local SS office in person. Do not try to do it on-line. I tried it. I know.

I was wondering why no-one had answered you yet. I think most are younger than their FRA.

I just did this so my wife could start claiming on my earnings record. As above, we went into the office in person (long wait time for an appointment). I was bothered by the fact that I didn't walk away with any paper saying they had the "suspend" part recorded.

But, I got a letter today from SS saying they had started and suspended my benefit.

According to the worker, I can start when I want to with a phone call.
