Interesting map from Kiplinger that looks pretty accurate. I checked a few states that I was familiar with and they looked OK.

You have to be careful. They may not always include local taxes. MD for example, they only show the state part of the income tax. Each county adds another 2-3% on top of the state tax. It adds up.
 
SC got a Most friendly rating and
PA god a Friendly rating

SC taxes retirement income and PA does not yet it got a higher, not lower rating. Not completely accurate I think.
 
Similarly, Ohio does not tax military retirement pay, but the article doesn't make this clear (the wording is obtuse).
