there is a guy at my current office who has several coffee vending machines set up.

vaguely refers to profits going to charity

I don't believe it

he is a non-manager living in a neighbourhood most managers can't afford

Along the same vein, here is a true story . . .

Quote:
New Zealand—Police launched an international search for two New Zealanders who allegedly took the money and ran after a bank mistakenly put 10 million New Zealand dollars ($6.1 million) into their account.
Couple withdraws money, flees after bank error - The Denver Post

That story ran back in May 2009. To the best of my knowledge they haven't yet been caught (a fact which astonishes me). Making $6MM disappear from a bank account is no simple task.

This is also a true story, but I have only my wife and three children to verify it. And I might be able to find an online statement too. Several years ago, I checked my checking account online during one evening and found that my account had $20 million dollars extra in the account, reflecting a deposit made into the account. I called my entire family to the monitor and they all saw the $20,000,000 deposit. I thought we had hit the lottery, and was trying to figure out exactly what I was going to do. I just planning to sit on it for a while and we decided we had to eventually tell the bank about the mistake. The next morning my account reverted back to the correct balance.

DW went the bank last week and asked for her balance at the counter. Printed statement says "18,975.47" .... she's expecting it to say ~$800. So she comes home smiling until I point out the last 4 digits of the account number are not her account.
