I was emailed a little surprise info from the CFP at Vanguard when he told me that my plan requires 45 days after retiring before I can roll my 401k into an IRA. I was planning on starting my monthly paycheck right away. No paycheck for 6 weeks will really hurt.
I had a quick conversation with the CFP but he was suggesting the Life Strategy Moderate Growth Fund. I'm not too keen on that so I told him that I wanted to research more funds and we could talk more about what I was interested in later. Any questions you can think of for me to ask or any Vanguard Funds you would recommend.
Right now I have Primecap, Ext. Market, Wellington, Windsor, Total Int'l Stock, and TIPS and will make some changes to a bit more conservative portfolio.

What's wrong with the Life Strategy Moderate Growth Fund?

It seems you like the old-style actively-managed Vanguard funds. If you are not going to take the advice of the CFP, why bother with the CFP?

My advice: LifeStrategy Moderate Growth, it is 60/40.

Hi Fed,

Take a look at Lazy Portfolios. Invest Simple with Lazy Portfolios - MarketWatch.com

They're simple, using well-diversified funds with low-cost, no-load index funds, no active trading nor market timing and no commissions. (Click on the portfolio name to see how each is constructed with Vanguard funds).

Funny you mention this site. I have it bookmarked! It has given me a good guide and I will have a major percentage invested in Total US and Total Int'l stock fund. In fact, I was more interested in the Life Strategy Growth Fund out of that grouping of funds.

If 6 wks is going to really hurt, then lucky you that the market is at record highs. Sell a little of your regular brokerage account (long term capital gain stuff) to tide you over.

Something to think about besides that is a cash (cash equivalent) cushion, so that if the market plummets 90% in 2 weeks like 1929 level, that you have cash to spend for a couple of years without selling any stock.
