Zuki,

We recently switched to internet service with NetZero ($9.95/month, unlimited hours). It works great.

The best deals on cell phones, if you only plan to use it occasionally, are the prepaid phones. I am considering getting one for emergency/ traveling purposes.

You can get DISH network for $24.99/ month, plus tax.

And I thought I was the only person on the planet without a cell phone. Zuki, you have got me beat! Do you really have a tv with rabbit ears?? I haven't seen that in many years. Why, you can't see ESPN, can you?

Never had one yet, although I suspect when I ER, I will get one as I will probably to be away from home so I will not be easily reachable.

Have a look at some of the VoIP (voice over IP) companies out there. This works by turning your analog phone conversations into digital data and then sending it out over your DSL/cable internet connection. There are a number of them out there now so you'll need to shop around for features and price. The big limitation is that if your ISP goes down then so does your phone. You'll need a backup - I keep my basic regular phone service with no long distance plan.

I currently use Lingo - www.lingo.com - and I pay $15 / month for 500 minutes per month calling North America + Western Europe. Extra minutes are pretty cheap and the costs for other countries beyond North America & Europe are cheap too. I have had some trouble in calling Japan (voice quality trouble) but if I hang up and dial again it's usually fixed.

There are others too like Vonage - www.vonage.com

We had a thread on this not too long ago. http://early-retirement.org/cgi-bin/...5264184;start=

I thought that you said that you blew $100/month on the phone. That's a lot of add-on services if there's no long distance involved. What the VoIP companies offer is all of the add-ons too included in the price. I've got caller id, call waiting, call-back, 3 way calling, etc. etc.

sprint centel here intown offers a package.

you cannot buy just what you need.

it is all hidden in part of pkg a b c or

and mine is the pkg that gets caller id and call wait.

but includes *69 *82 blah blah.

that is why i hate monopolies

you know, the ones the ftc protects you from.

ha.
