Class of 2012

Officially retired in six days...sort of. I've agreed to substitute for my replacement if she has a family emergency or goes on vacation. My definition of "retirement" is going to look more like working on a very limited basis...just a day or two here and there thought the year. I can live with that.

I need to remove my name from the 2012 group. I was going to leave at end of year, but boss asked me to stay a little longer to help him implement a new more robust business strategy. My revised official date is 4/30/2013. During this period, I only plan to work 4 days/week which will mitigate some of my commuting frustration and I'll be there when bonuses get handed out which is probably better than being gone.

Well, here I am 8 months in. I could not be happier. I did have some trouble adjusting, but I think this was due to being laid off before I quit. I had never been laid off before, so my ego was bruised. lol Once that was over, yowza.

We had a great year (April forward). We traveled, we took up bike riding, we did lots of home projects, and we learned to sleep in! I swear I had not been able to sleep past 7AM for 10 years - now I regularly sleep until 8:30. :)

My DH has been doing lots of volunteer work, but I am holding off until next year. I am the type of person who ends up managing everything and I don't want that to happen just yet.

We are currently planning our vacations for next year which included a couple weeks in California, a couple weeks in Italy, a week at a lake house with all the kids/grandkids in New Hampshire, and in the fall another long roadtrip (3-4 weeks) but this time we will head down the eastern coast. (Last year we did the smokies down to Nashville).

Also we finally hired an attorney and did a living trust. I can't tell you how much better we feel after doing that.

Life is good!
 
We waited because it was a second marriage and we had to either have painful conversations (no that goes to my kid!), or just agree to act as if each other's children were our own. So 10 years into marriage, we finally got there.

So great to get a good attorney who knew all the ins and outs. :) Expensive though.
 
I have "almost" arrived! Tomorrow is my last day. No regrets. I'm ready to call my time my own.

Yes...i agree...you get your life back.

A dear friend retired a year ahead of me from ATT. Last time we spoke on the phone, she asked me if i EVER get bored. (Have not been bored ever in the 6 months since retiring). K mentioned that she has been asked that several times....aren't you bored??

There is no time to be bored. We are doing what we want to do and/or need to do without the interference of you-know-what.

You will love your new life. :)
 
Tomorrow is my last workday too tho actually retire date is 12/31. This week employer had a mini party with presentation of gift. Now the passing of each hour of my new life will be marked by chiming clock. A beautiful thing i much appreciate but chime may be turned off if it stalls me from moving on. Funny too how nice, friendly, and open i felt toward all that day. Nothing like knowing you are leaving to free your loving spirit! To be honest, most of them are nice people. I think the pressures and confinement of our jobs can make us often act like someone else. Already i am less bothered and worrisome. More me. Definitely more living in the moment. And have written in journal regularly this week. And the end result has a voice that's calm and easy. Very different than any journal entries I've ever done.
 
I'm at the apartment, just turned off the utils, paid them their due, and DW is turning off her cell service right now. When she gets back, we head for the hotel. Once the suitcases are unloaded and we are checked in, I head to the office for one last time. I will say my last goodbyes, shake a few hands, accept and give a few hugs, turn in my credit card, office security card, parking card, office keys, and my company car, then catch a cab back to the hotel. We fly tomorrow. I keep the phone and PC for a month or two to field emails and calls related to the transition. Thankfully, we were able to get enough of the transition done that I won't need to come back in January. So, in essence, I'm FREE!
