That is all I ever hear, 'what will you do all day? you have to do something worthwhile' having done 35 years full time, I can do what I bloody well like! why should I justify myself to anyone?

Class of 2015

This has probably been said before but you could turn the question around: "What do you do all day?". Maybe add a little smile and wink.

They might not even listen but they might, and think.

It's been an eventful 24 hours. Monday at the end of the day, my boss's boss called me in to let me know that there would be no severance packages offered in 2Q. I thanked him for the info. Discussed with DH last night, and decided to revert to my original ER plan of March 31 ( I was only delaying in hopes of hitting the severance package jackpot).

First thing this morning I gave my two-weeks notice. Boss's boss was happy for me. Boss is panicking, because he's afraid no one in our group knows how to do some of my tasks. He's right; in fact I am one of three people in the company that know how to run one proprietary software. I've got a couple of weeks to teach him the basics and then he will just have to learn the rest by trial and error.

I sent an email to a few people at my old group. I was with the old group for five years, but was transferred out a few years ago. That group was my favorite work environment, both in terms of type of work and people, of my 25-yr career. Within half an hour the old boss was on the phone with me, asking if I would consider working with his group instead of retiring. They have an opening that is right in my wheelhouse. I was aware of the job posting but it is written in such a way to preclude me from filling it. Apparently that can be changed if someone in the HR chain can be persuaded to be flexible, but I might have to move to part time to fit in the budget. I told the old boss that I would listen to any offer he could clear with HR. He will get back to me. I asked him why the change in attitude-- they knew the job opening was perfect for me yet they allowed it to be written in a way to exempt me. He said "now you are leaving and we are in danger of losing your knowledge and expertise"

So as of now I am retiring in two weeks. Awesome! Or maybe I'll be moving to a part-time position in a place that I really like. That would be good too.

That doesn't sound like a group I'd want to go back to.

If somebody at my company told me they purposely wrote a job opening to exclude me, only because they thought they could take advantage of my knowledge and expertise while I was still there but working another job I didn't like as much...

I think I would have told the guy to take his job and shove it. I wouldn't help them out the last few weeks I was there, and I sure wouldn't work for them.

But that's just me...

After sleeping on it, I agree. Today I told the old boss (more diplomatically than suggested) that I'm just ready to go. He then asked if I would work as a contractor. I told him maybe, but certainly not right away. I'd like to take the summer to enjoy my freedom. He knows how to get in touch with me if he still needs me in the Fall.

Can't offer me more $ because Medicare pays fee for service. Ugh.

My replacement doesn't feel he is ready and hasn't been able to complete all the work he needs to do to get up to speed in his other facilities where he has been working since January.

In medicine we used to say, "In the day of the giants..." Fill in the blanks - we made only $50 a week during our internship year and supported a family, we were on call every other night, etc., etc.

In my day you were handed a caseload and you plowed your way through seeing all the patients when you could and were thorough and efficient. There was no saying no as a doctor if you were employed by a practice or a hospital.

@EastWestGal - I need your guidance.

Anyway I said I'd think about it but first I have to write 21 notes.

If I had planned on retiring completely I would say no entirely but I was going to work one day a week until the end of the year.

So maybe for ONE MORE MONTH only, I will work another 1/2 day a week and do what I can. That's it. Take care of the 'psychiatric emergencies' and new patients only until they figure out how to replace me. May 1st. The end. Then back on plan.

Is anyone still questioning why I want to retire to Mexico where I just can't work in my once chosen field?

Oy vey.

No OMM. I decided today after many tearing-my-thinning-hair-out emails over absolute nonsense/garbage and trying to use some version of the new most horrible progress note form I have ever seen - that I am done as of 4/6 and will just work 1 day a week as originally planned. It's not my fault they didn't plan well for my departure when I gave them 6 month's lead time and a 3 month written notice.

Adios amigos!

Good for you, leaving. I agreed to sign an independent contractor agreement, on call for emergency situations. I refused to work in January. Then our hot tub broke down and either we get rid of it or replace it. Oh, and BTW the deck is getting old. So...I've worked 3-4 days per month and actually enjoyed it. The nurses are all happy to see me and one of the obstetricians gave me a heartfelt hug.

I went to a group meeting to address some issues I observed that were problems--little slips in quality of notes and communication. A couple of doctors were the problem. So the doctors (except for my dear friend) all ganged up on me for bringing up care problems. I wasn't able to say a quarter of what needed to be said to bring about any understanding of what I was trying to illustrate so I wouldn't sound harsh, but all the interruptions and attacks were just awful. And while I was at the hospital I took care of a couple of issues that needed fixing since there was a software change.

So, I'm going to work long enough to pay for that hot tub and deck, which should be August (4-6 days per month) not talk to anyone, go to no meetings, then I'm done.

My friend is moving out of state away from the toxic environment too.

I can afford the hot tub without the extra work, but it would mean dipping in the portfolio a little more than planned this year, which I don't want to do.

Stick to your guns better than I have.

Class of 2015

This is the problem with us docs - we want to do it right and keep trying to improve things. But I am coming to the conclusion that probably one just has to retire fully. I will be doing this 1 day a week deal and make nice money for minimal supervision of 2 NPs (1 meeting a month, sign off on orders for 1 of them and 10% chart review) until the end of the year. Then I will be done for good.

Also trying not to dip into the after-tax brokerage account until 2016.

Have you thought of doing some hours with Teledoc or another such product? You can do it from home, your car, wherever.
