Class of 2015

Well I have 14 to 20 months before I retire. Several things in that timeframe need to happen before I declare my self Retirement Ready. The first thing I will do is sleep in the first day rather than get up at 5:00 AM. Shortly after that, DW and I would like to take our Motor Home out for a few weeks to unwind and plan the next chapter in our lives. In our mid fifties we have been blessed with good health, adequate financial means and a youthful spirit . Maintaining each of these blessings will be our first priority. Travel is heavy on our list and hope to spend a little time in Europe. We will also travel to parts of the U.S. by RV or in some cases automobile with our pet.

We have 3 ERs at 43 years of age, 8 under 50. That's quite early. Oh to be young and retired!

I might (but only "might") change mine to Mar 2015, only to maybe take advantage of an ESPP purchase in March. If I leave before then, they don't do a partial purchase, you lose out on the stock purchase, and just get your ESPP contributions refunded.

But if the stock price remains at the levels it's at right now, the after-tax profit would only amount to a few thousand dollars, definitely below $10k, which to me, isn't enough for me to stay another months.

If it's over $10k, I'll stay another month. If not, I'm leaving in February.

Yes...I want to get away THAT badly, that I'm willing to leave $10k on the table to leave a month early.

So what is the first trip or adventure you are going to make when you RE?

We' still have school age kids so are confined to school breaks for travel (for now.) We want to spend an ENTIRE summer in Europe. It's in the early planning stages. We'll string together 1 week vacation apartment rentals. 10-11 weeks in all.

We may do a lease on a car for part of it. But we all enjoy trains and ferries as well so that is still on the table. (We'd rent cars in 2 day bursts to see things outside our city bases as needed.)

Budget is $25k for a family of 4 for 10 weeks. This money was lump sum set aside for a while. (We've got some padding set aside also - but I think we can do it for that amount.)

I love researching vacations before we go - so the fun has already started for me.

I hope to add my name to the list in a couple of months. I'm waiting to see if the liquidation of my company retirement plan goes as I've projected, will know in a few months.

IF it does, I could be ER in April 2015 @ 46 with $3 mill, DH will be 47.

If the number is below $2.5 then, we might have to work a few more years.

Healthcare is our big budget buster, hopefully ACA will be more solidified by then.

Management had difficulty making some decisions today. To help move them along, I declared my intent to retire as of July 1, 2015. Hope that wasn't a mistake. But I did get the desired result. Now they're ready to move on some items they've been putting off.

Welcome to the club islandtraveler! I can't believe we started this thread about one year ago. At that point, I had just changed jobs to a less stress, more mellow work place with the same employer. I had 22 more months to go. Now it's 10 months to go for me, 6 months for the people who RE in Jan - Utrecht, SonnyJim, Options, Shabby, BrianB, and maybe johnnyfuego (great name!). I officially declare Sept 1, 2015 to be my last work day. I will be 57 and lovely wife already retired from a grueling career (teaching 4th grade). I will have a $40k military pension, and a small megacorp pension. she has a 12k pension. and we will both be eligible for SSN in a few years. No mortgage and about 1.1 mil in various funds. My main concern is not whether can survive comfortably. Its the four or five "needy" relatives who have not prepared for retirement. Hard to calculate that expense
