As we all have entered, or are entering that "year to go" window, we may be getting nervous. Well, some of us may.
For those of us getting that churning stomach feeling, I want to remind us about this excellent post in the FAQ section of this board.
Some Important Questions to Answer Before Asking - Can I Retire?
DW and I need to go through these. I had so much bravado 5 years ago when I declared 2018 my year. Now that it is on the horizon, my knees are buckling a bit...

Yeah - a little nervous here also. 91/2 months to go! We have met our financial targets, but have a lot of things to do.
1. Get house ready for sale. 2. De clutter, etc. 3. Take care of all known medical needs (annual exams, new glasses, DH dental work needed (7k!), etc.
4. Potential move to a new state in retirement (which is both exciting and a bit scary)
to be close to DD who is expecting 1st baby.

DW and I are at the tail end of doing this in preparation for possibly hanging it up in 2018. My advice - start doing this NOW, especially since you only have 9 1/2 months to go. I'm still a bit shell shocked from everything we've been through with docs and dentists.

Added myself to the list for April. Also want to second Joe Wras' comment about feeling my knees buckling - I think I've covered all my bases, but...I still get a little queasy once in a while.

Well, that was hardly an auspicious beginning to my Glide Path Year! On my first off day of "pre-retirement" (I will have 2 years worth of vacation days to use up before August 1, 2018, and I have calculated that I can *almost* have all 4 day weeks, counting the holidays, until then), my car died on a dangerous interstate while en route to a hike, and I spent much of that day dealing with a totally dead car. That brought on a nasty migraine. Then I had to grapple with getting a new car and ended up taking another vacation day to deal with that (but having new car is VERY nice).
The original plan had been to buy a new car after a modest influx of cash I am expecting in August. Now I had to take out a short term loan.
My next pre-retirement day is Monday, and *it* will be spent running errands, such as getting new license plates, and medical appointments. Hmmm, I am not doing something right :-)
I'll press the restart button for all of this in July! Then I can start fiddling with those 4 day weeks again, starting with July 13, a significant work anniversary for me. But I need to make sure it isn't all running errands and doctors' appointments! I'd better make some specific plan for that day. OMY!

Hi Ears 20
So what do you do for work presently and what state do you reside?

I'm in Kansas, w*rking as a consulting actuary. DW is already retired and a few years older than I; some mobility issues are starting to pop up for her so I'm feeling some urgency to RE. I'm right on the fence as far as FI goes - FireCalc gives me ~95% success - so I'm still wavering just a bit.
What's your situation?

Similiar to your situation. DW is almost 7 years older. If we walked away next December we would have 80k guaranteed income. When I turn 62 another 24k annually kicks in making it over 100k(net). Plus should have about 750k inn investments
Presently live in Virginia

I'm setting June next year as my target month - late enough to get 401k match, early enough to spend the summer just part-time sailing and enjoying Chicago! Also, start of June looks like a contract end date for the project I'm working on, so it may avoid even having to turn over work to people.

I’m happy to report that I remain on track to FIRE as part of the class of 2018! My last day on the payroll will be 12/31/17 with my first day of FIRE being 1/1/2018.
With my accumulated vacation, my last day in the office will actually be mid-October so I’ve given my boss 90 days notice last week. For me, announcing my plan to my boss or co-workers to FIRE is a huge milestone as I have not told anyone at work of my intent until now. In the past, I’ve seen co-workers tell everyone they plan to retire a year or two in advance and I’ve never seen that news work to their advantage.
We’ve also sold our house this week and will be renting for a few months until we re-locate after FIRE so we have a lot of change coming up in the next year. But it’s satisfying to successfully execute our plan that was hatched about 20 years ago.
I’ve also had my moments of doubt during the past several years as I think about all the money I’m leaving on the table at age 57. I know that working another 5 years (or more) would add considerably to my future income and wealth. And I’m not being forced out at my megacorp or slowed down at all by health problems. I actually enjoy my job most days.
My thanks to you all, who have reminded me that our time here is limited and provided me with the resolve to pull the trigger and FIRE. Honestly, I don’t know if I would have been able to FIRE at this point if not for the collective wisdom of the people on this site. Thank You!
So I have updated the Class of 2018 by removing cat wrangler and moving myself into January.
