Deferring could be smart. In my case, split the difference and took some cash out and the rest in a pension. I still worry that I made the wrong decision and should have taken the whole pension. But it isn't COLAed, and is taxed at an earned income rate. So I needed to put the skills to work I learned in this forum and manage my income more skillfully to avoid income tax and hopefully invest at a higher rate than inflation with some of the money.
In a nutshell, I annuitized my "needs" and am hopefully savvy enough, or frugal enough, to manage the rest well and get my "wants" covered, too.

Last 3 days of work this week. Office Retirement party on the 30th. Family celebration next weekend. Going away happy hour the following week. Starting to seem pretty real. After that, travel in the mountains to see friends and family. Cleaning out 39 years of stuff from the office harde than it should be but lots of memories.

First day of retirement. Thanks to this forum and a couple of other sites, I realized I really didn't need to work for the man any longer. Thanks for the confidence boost and guidance to get me straightened out and pointed in the right direction. Excited to see how my plan works out.

Watch out kaudrey. Are you really ready for retirement? You’re giving off some signals they maybe you are not ready. If you have been planning on retiring this year for some time then you should have had more than enough time to get things lined up. In fact, it should take no more than 2 months to get things lined up. The cemeteries are full of indispensable people.
Retirement is about you, not the company. Liking your job and the people you work with is good, while you are working. A new life awaits you.
I sincerely hope you make it out this year.

Well it pains me to write this but it’s July 1 and I’m still working. So no June retirement.
Looking more like December at this point. I’ll update my date when I’m not on my phone.
Congratulations to everyone who has retired!
Out-to-Lunch- isn’t today your day?

Yes! Yes it is! Thank you for thinking of me. I will "make the call" in another post so as to not draw any additional attention to your plight!

Well, my day has arrived. I am officially over at the end of the day (and let's just say that I am currently sitting in my backyard with a beer right now ). The cash portion of the separation incentive has arrived in my bank account, and I will be anxious to see the portion that goes to tax-deferred accounts show up this evening.

Please forgive the lack of formatting skills in the list below. Last day was yesterday. Retirement party in the office, retirement watch, lots of kind words and handshakes, and a few gifts of scotch and other fine spirits. A shared finger of said spirit with three colleagues inspired by my retirement to end the day while sitting in my office (now former office).
Today was blissful. Slept in. Coffee on the porch, yard work, cleaned the garage, lunch with a few fellow retirees, and dinner out with the DW. Party with the kids and friends this weekend. Guess I’m there.

34 of 44 who planned retirement so far in 2021 have crossed the finishing line. 77%, a good score.
Congratulations to all.

Retirement Limbo
My last official day at the office was June 30th, as planned. I told my bosses that I could stay on until September 1 because there were things left undone in the main project and I knew we couldn't finish everything by June 30th. Response was "we will keep you and pay you until Sept" but you should just stay home and answer any questions that might come up. We're going to get on with it without you.
So, not sure if June 30th is my "retirement" date or not. Definitely Sept is when the pension kicks in. I'm in Retirement Limbo I guess, and am loving answering questions from home, as they are all too smart to ever need me. Will be a very quiet 2 months!
