For me, it is the psychology of being frugal and not wasteful for decades. It seems so wasteful to walk away from peak earnings and healthcare worth 30K a year. But at the end of the day, we can live pretty comfortably on about 2% SWR (before SS and Medicare kick in). It is more of a therapist that will help here rather than CPA/financial planner.

I think for many the omy is more emotional than financial. We may rationalize it with a financial angle but it is hard to give up one's career when one is at the peak of the earning years.

I am 52 and my DS has just graduated college and has a job. My DD has two years left but I have the money set aside for her last two years and a wedding next year. I have met the FI side but I have not been emotionally ready before. No one in my family has RE before. I am the youngest of six and only my oldest brother is retired at 64 and that was not by his own choice. I know my late DW would have been happy for us to RE as we had planned for that for years. Now that the time has come it is harder.

I decided to pick a date and stick with it to force the decision. I have not told anyone at w*rk but I have told my friends and family. No one believes I can do it. I will be forgoing a lot of money but once you are FI, you have to also love w*rk and the BS that goes with it. My BS bucket is overflowing so I am becoming much more mentally ready. By next April 1, I should be all set and hopefully not regretting my decision (the March bonus payout will just be icing on the cake).

* ROLL CALL * Class of 2022 *

I'm bored at w*rk today and decided to make a roll call for the class of 2022 so far. I can't wait for 2022!!!

I excluded a couple of early posters with < 5 posts total and tried to peek at profiles to confirm dates, so hopefully I got it close to right. And sorry in advance for any typos in names - I scribbled them down but my handwriting is so terrible even I have trouble with it And a big apology if I did miss anyone - please feel free to add yourself!

If a month was noted, I captured that and organized accordingly. If no month was noted, I put 'XX 2022' and organized those people at the end.

I hope we can all update this as we go with a copy/paste into a new edited roll call as people make updates to their timing.

So here it is - good luck to all the 2022 hopefuls!

Pretty much the same for me. I have some moments where I panic a bit at the thought of not having a paycheck coming in for the first time ever in my whole life. But I realize I've done the planning, including what adjustments to make if things go south. So I am mentally preparing by sticking to a date. I think that helps me cast aside the fears and doubts.

Thanks caninelover for creating a roll call of all the planned retirees in Class of 2022. It will be good to see everyone’s dates come and go, with hopefully vocational freedom at the end of each proposed date. It will also be good to see all those before me actually retiring and me being thrust to the “front”.

Cannot wait. Time has went so fast recently, I hope it doesn’t slow down. Plenty of time for a slow down after May.

You're welcome

For me time has slowed to an excruciating crawl. I know I should take things day by day but it is so dang hard to stay focused. I keep daydreaming about FIRE in 7 months. No matter how hard I try not to think about it - my brain goes right there!!

Thanks for making the roll call. Please add me to the list for Feb. I’m planning last day to be right after Presidents Day but hopefully to stay on the payroll until end March with vacation time. I will be 55.

Thanks for taking care of that. My wife and I are still on track for May 2022. We discussed maybe going sooner if W**k tries to force us all back after a year+ of WFH. I cant bring myself to go back to the cubical village and neither can she.

That's a nice chunk of banked vacation time! Have you checked with your HR that they will play along with that plan as opposed to paying out your banked time and setting your termination date on your last day on the job?

Hi everyone! Just found this forum and am thrilled. DH and I are planning on a June 30, 2022 retirement and I'm super excited.

A little about us: at time of retirement, DH will be 50 and I'll be 48. We're currently planning on moving from high tax CA to no income tax WA when we retire.

We love to travel, cook and eat out. Our plans for retirement include learning new languages (my husband currently is studying Italian, and I'll try to learn both Italian and German) and working out a lot. I'm also looking forward to knitting and taking up archery, while my husband is looking forward to rowing more.

Hahaha! We have had a little vacation condo in PDX for many years and have gone to Seattle frequently for his rowing regattas, so we think of ourselves more as PNWers than Californians.

Where in Seattle are you? We are coming up from PDX in a couple of weeks to look at real estate, mainly Bainbridge and Mercer Islands.
