Golf Talk Tuesdays 2015-2020

Got out and golfed 9 at a local course. Not a great course, but I'm not a great golfer, so all is good. Walked the 9 holes and used my new Garmin golf watch. Thanks to Midpack, I got it working with my phone. Pretty cool. Bottom line, it was good to get out. It's going to get very cold for this time of year the next few days so on a sunny and somewhat warm day, I was doing well. I like walking 9 holes. I'm not sure I'd want to go 18 but it's good exercise to walk it. I got almost 5000 steps in.

Good Job. I rode a cart for nine today and shot a 41 from the middle tees. That is a good score for me on any day.

Right now it's cart golf to save aggravating my knee again. Walking down hill is a killer. $7.50 is my Blow That Dough for the day.

I used to work in pro shop. When closed at the end of the day, we’d all grab a cart and see how many holes we could get in before dark. Crazy.

Courses in SF Bay Area finally opening up; now able to play courses in other counties. Scheduled for Tuesday to play my first round in 90 days.

I expect it’s gonna be ugly...but fun!

After a few weeks completely closed down (boo!), we’ve been walk only for 5 weeks. We’ve played 9-10 holes mostly but walked 18 twice (about 6.5 miles), including yesterday, and paid dearly the day after. Fortunately next week we’ll have “carts allowed, family or household members can ride in the same cart, all others single rider.” Yeah!

Our league is suspended but some get together on ZOOM once a week to share lies. One of the guys had shoulder surgery and told us his doc told him he could play golf starting Wednesday. Someone immediately chimed in “that’s a miracle, you couldn’t play golf before the surgery...” [rim shot]

You may have forgotten all of your bad habits- I often play a better round
after a long lay off.

Traveled from VA to NC to play a course called Cross Creek. It is amply named as it has a lot of water running through fairways and around greens. Greens had just been aerated so the putting was pretty rough. The course is tight and the staff is friendly. I'll be back. Golf elbow is putting a strain on my game but It's worth toughing it out to get out in the fresh air and swing the club.

Well, it wasn’t too bad really: 85 which is pretty close to my HI score. Actually, it was fantastic just to be in the course, playing and socializing with friends. I hit the first four fairways and then started going right off the tee box; made a few ridiculously long putts including a 55 footer for birdie and a 25 foot sandy but, I also had two doubles & two 3-putts. Hmmmm...this is sounding like my pre-pandemic game. 🤪. Anyway, it was fun and I’m looking forward to the next time.

Sounds like a productive round(as in you had fun). My first here was an 84, with putting being the biggest problem. Played Monday for my 2nd round here and the putter was on fire. Shot a 77 with hitting 13 greens in reg. Not bragging at all, as my average is more like 82, so that was a great round for me.

I played a nice course 40 miles away at a casino/resort a couple of days ago. Shot 84 which is not bad considering the greens were lightning fast. So several 3 putts and a couple of chunk chip shots. About to play with my buds at my home course. Playing golf sure helps the mind in these mostly stay at home days.

Tried playing for the first tie in two months. My playing partner and I hated it. It takes away all the fun. Might try again next week, but separate carts and distancing changes the game for me.

I took up golf after years of playing tennis. Leagues, tournaments, etc. It was my focus, but as time passed I lost my interest in the competitive aspect. People can be jerks. I found I love to play golf alone. No competition. Just hitting the ball. Don't get me wrong, I do like playing with DW and other friends, but being alone on a course is quite serene.

How so? Please elaborate. I've played several rounds in separate carts and didn't notice much difference.

It limits socializing but you’re together on tees, greens, presumably lost balls and when you land within talking distance. Not a huge difference to me. It’s sure preferable to not playing at all to me. When my regular course reopened walking only, we walked 18 severally times which is highly social (6 feet apart) but that’s tough on our feet and backs, were very glad to have carts again. We mostly played 9-10 holes walking.

And I understand some courses have installed clear plexi or plastic divider curtains on their carts? Might make sense if this goes on as long as I think it may - I assume many courses don’t have enough carts for all single riders.

I still do not get the need to "socialize" during golf play. Perhaps because I am not that good at playing . Other than when waiting for the group ahead before teeing off, we do not socialize anywhere else. We try to play "ready golf" and do not want to hold up folks behind us. When I see a group chatting about during and after putting and not getting off the green when there is no one ahead of them, I wonder if they care that they are slowing down others.

Wednesday I played with 3 friends on a longer course and we chose to ride separate carts. The round went fast. Rarely were our tee shots near each other (mix of lefty and right golfers probably helped ) and that helped speed play.

Interesting idea... I know the golf course that we played in Florida was having trouble with not enough carts with single rider carts.

Alternatively, perhaps clubs will get golfboards and rent them instead of carts. Looks like fun to me.

I soooo hope that more clubs offer those. They do look like fun.

The guys in my group all own our carts so we always ride as singles. Plenty of social time at the tee and green. But I guess it's what you're used to.

Don't see any difference in the social aspect of golf, same regular group, we all walk, plenty of opportunity to chat (or trash talk) walking from tee to green.
