It took me a while to get in the swing of not having a work calendar and meetings all day long. My DH advised me to pretend like I was on vacation until I got used to it and that was great advice - I took it and I am still acting like I am on vacation years later.

How long did it take?

I was fired at the end of March 2016. I had worked there for 29 years and it was a shock. What's worse is that I'm pretty sure I was a victim of discrimination (I'm gay) as a new "military" regime took over at the company. I was also harassed and watched. It was toxic: I found myself afraid to go to the bathroom or leave to get a salad to eat at my desk. I had one boss who would rake me over the coals for an hour in his office telling me how stupid I was...

You'd think I'd be glad to be gone.

I had saved diligently and was almost ready to retire. However, I wanted it to be my choice.

They deprived me of retirement festivities and benefits.

So, it's taken me some time. I've had almost PTSD like nightmares. In fact I had one last night.

However, for some reason the new year is actually helping me to realize I am retired and I can relax somewhat. It's hard to let go of the past but I'm trying.

I voluntarily retired from my last j*b, but I too was fired from the one prior to that - and at the time thought I was forcibly retired. To quote myself in a prior thread, that firing was for "grotesquely political" reasons alone, and I too was bitter. Once in a while I still get a bad memory flash of those days. But I quickly got over it and now have fun days each day. You'll get there, too.

Retired now for about two weeks. When I get out of bed in the morning I still need to remind myself that I don't need to get dressed immediately or be somewhere. When I schedule something I still think what will be going on the office......but then I remind myself thankfully there is no more office.

Now at four weeks the feeling is gone. Now I think about what is my next adventure or honey do to accomplish. I got a trainer to get back into to shape.

It was a week today for me and I'm still saying to the DW things like "...at work we...", "...when I d go to work Monday..", etc. Hasn't sunk in yet, still feels like a vacation.
