Depends on the size of the community. I only have access to cable internet, can't get DSL, FIOS etc. I use magicjack for phone , can't beat the price.

ferco, I guess I can't help if you can't get FIOS, but I'll give you an idea of my costs.
Verizon Fios Bundle (cable TV, internet and phone) is $139.95 per month if bundled. More expensive if you drop the phone for example. Broken down as follows: $30 phone, $70 HD TV and $40 for 35/35 internet speed. Then add $17 for HBO, $6 for an extra digital adapter and $17 for rental of High Definiton DVR cable box for my wife's entertainment system. My standard set top box is free. Add about $15 for taxes and fees and reduce it by $17 for being a valued customer and my monthly bill comes to about $178.

On top of that we spend the $8/month for Netflix.

That is the total of our entertainment for the month. Now and then we will add Cinamax or Showtime if they run some monthly special. Wife has to have everything right at her finger tips.

If you live in a WiMax (Sprint 4G) serviced area, you can probably take advantage of this: Free Wireless Internet | Free Internet | 4G Wireless Internet - FreedomPop

I've been using it for about a week now, quite happy so far. It's only free if you use less than 500MB per month, so it stays in my car to provide free internet away from home.

If you live in one particular city in the SE, there is a better option than FIOS. Kansas City will be a second option in a couple years, though that isn't really the SE.
