The three yacht clubs in Marblehead.

Here is the Eastern YC's current "admissions" webpage (I guess "joining" or "membership" would sound too plebeian). Talk about stuffy and archaic.

On the SS Badger, any stowaways caught are put in the boiler room and have to shovel coal into the boilers for the remainder of the trip.

Here is a subjective description of Chicago’s yacht clubs.

I know each of these clubs very, very well.

Things have changed since 1982 when this was written, especially the idea of 'loose boards' on the porch of the Eastern. Plus, they had a big fire several years ago which helped them do a full renovation.

Here is a short article briefly summarizing Toronto's clubs.

My parents were members of a yacht club here in San Diego in the late 60's early 70's. They owned a small catamaran (Pacific Cat, predecessor to the Hobie) that they dry docked there. At the time it was definitely more sailboat oriented. We kids took lessons and then could rent sabots for cheap when dad was working on the boat. There was a 'rec room' for the kids that had a ping pong table and a pinball machine.

Then they did a massive remodel.... the quaint/divey restaurant bar became chic. The rec room became much more snooty as new members' kids came in and sneered at us sailboat kids. My dad sold the boat around that time as he'd taken on another huge volunteer responsibility.

But when we were members it was fun.
