Rehabbing a summer cabin built in 1972

Very nice country. We came close to betting it all on the abandoned military base in Condon Oregon.

There is a little mining town called Eureka in Nevada. Long stretch before you find a Costco over on the other side of the state. But there are a couple little cabins that somebody with lots of time and wood skills redid back in the 70s.

Doesn't make sense for us, but I am such a sucker for something different. Rock house? Cool interior woodwork?

Contacted a welder friend of mine about building a couple of simple metal supports for that cantilevered front deck.

He is also a sculptor, and had a much better idea.

He wants to make them look like logs from the forest, something similar to this:
ETA: Being the FIRE forum, I should add that he wants to do it for me at cost.

What a novel idea! Very clever! Plus you can hang your bird feeders or houses right up next to the cabin on a few well placed branches

Got some more work done today. Applied second coat of paint to two sides of cabin, finished ledger board for deck, and loaded up a cord of wood we're giving to a low income friend. Also listened to the 1958 Grundig I restored a few years ago... Back in the day, it was a $1k radio!!! It has a sweet sound. Good old tubes.

We're considering keeping the seat just to tease her.

Had a couple days of projects. Rebuilt the front deck. We were able to reuse the original 10 foot cedar planks for the top. Replaced the substructure. Also hauled off the old deck. And enjoyed a little time on the back deck. Look at that blue sky!!!

ETA: I guess I should call the wood "re-claimed" rather than "re-used." Makes me sound far more fashionable and HGTV aware.

Yes, a great tool. I have a corded one and the M18 cordless version. Might be my favorite power tool of all next to my Stihl 029 chainsaw with a 16” bar.

A beautiful place you have.

I'm redoing my primary home porch/step and I really needed a Saw All. I really don't want to buy one because I would use it so little. They are a very handy tool never the less.

Lowes has 20v Lion battery tool set for $99 which includes sawzall, circular saw, drill/driver and work light. Good deal IMHO. I used $20 off $100 coupon on top of it!

Had a little more fun at the cabin. Trail cam caught a visitor. Did some painting. Started prep on two major projects. Repairing the rear deck by replacing the 6x6x12s and putting in a wood stove.

Got lucky with the wood stove. A friend gave it to me. So, I spent a little time refurbishing it too. Needed new seals, and a little paint in spots. It doesn't look new, but neither does the cabin!

Got a little more work done today. Began the process of replacing the rotten rear deck supports, finished painting the main structure. Looks like I will have to replace about six feet of the under deck cross member. Rotten. Picture shows the cut out.

And, had a visitor at the spring.

Keim, you are making me look like a slacker. I have spent a whole lot of time enjoying my new cabin, and have done a little work. Here it is- We did some major pruning this weekend. Friend offered to lend us a pole saw- which was smaller than expected. Have a few bigger limbs to finish with a large chain saw next weekend, but it looks better I think. The top pic is before- the bottom is after!

Loft/bunk room before and after. My kids put these bunk beds together all by themselves! We're going to have to remove the fan and replace it with a box fan above the beam.

kitchen before and after. I covered up the blue backsplash with tile print contact paper, removed the spindles above the stove hood and changed the knobs from gold to silver.

living room- painted the blue door green, removed the blue topped coffee table and end tables and replaced those with a trunk and other tables from elsewhere in the cabin. Kitchen table is now black instead of blue, and the blue upholstered chairs were replaced with (free) natural wood ones.

SUre looks nice to me! I think yours is less of a fixer upper than mine.
