Shutting Off the Water Before Heading Out

Amethyst, I've worked on quite a few well pumps over the years and have never come across one that was just plugged in. Pool pumps and sump pumps, but never a well pump. Is this a common practice in your area of the country?

+1 Mine is hardwired and I can't ever recall seeing a well pump that is plugged in.

Breakers are often more accessible too.

I think I may have seen one with a plug - if you have a shallow well, the whole pump is up at ground level, not down in the well.

But a quick look on-line, and even the small 1/2 HP pumps have a hard-wiring box, no cord.

All good advice.

Cottage is in a cold weather location. Turn off pump breaker. Turn off water main. Open downstairs faucets. Open upstairs faucets. Flush toilets a couple of times to mainly empty tanks (probably unnecessary). RV antifreeze in all toilets and tub/shower traps. Unplug power vent to propane hot water heater which turns this off. Empty ice maker and turn ice maker off. Set thermostat to 55. Set propane fireplaces to 45 as furnace backup. Could drain water pressure and hot water tank to but never felt the need. No issues in 20 winters.
