Don't know the etiquette here, but I removed myself from the list. Embarrasing as it is, I'm not going to make my date.

We sold the business and for a couple reason have decided to continue working...for now. I've realized a couple things through the process.

1) You need to have a plan. I'm coming to realize that I need to have the money structured in a way that I can live off of. I also need to have health insurance, which while I can take COBRA and fix it later, it is better to have it out of the gate. Yes, these are excuses, but real to me...which brings me to the other realization:

2) I need to have a plan. In the Gut check thread... http://www.early-retirement.org/forums/f28/final-gut-check-feedback-56472.html BigNick, Packman, Midpack, Alan challenged me that my issue wasn't the money, but the emotional/mental aspects of the transition were my issues and they are right. I hate to admit it, but I read their book recommendations between selling the business (7/1) and the date I was going to give notice (7/15). As the date came closer, I realized I don't know what I'm going to do and I'm a bit scared! As a result, I've started to put together a bit of a plan for myself on what my interests/activities are going to be, what I'm going to pursue. I've also started to put down all the things I need to have in place. Since I'm a bit of a planner and doer, having the checklist and working it dilligently, when I get to a list that has check marks on it Hopefully I will be comfortable pulling the trigger!

I should be back on the list for 2011 or 2012.

You don't have anything to be embarrased about. It's a big decision, the right time is a unique personal choice, and this isn't a contest. I was FI several years before I retired, but like you I wasn't mentally ready.

And I started a similar thread about myself titled "what a wimp..." a while back after balking at pulling the trigger. I expected folks here to give me some grief, but no one did, though a few took the humorous route to reply.

You will know when you are ready, and only you. It's all good here. :flowers:

Nothing at all to be embarrassed about, in my opinion. I think only you can determine when the time is right to take the leap, others can give you pointers and resources, and it sounds like you took the feedback you received here to heart. Good for you!

I will look forward to seeing your name back on one of "The Class Of..." lists when the time is right for you :).

p.s. I am getting closer too, and I am experiencing many of the same feelings/emotions. I think they are quite normal, and I'm sure there are many on the forum who could comment from experience.

Just wanted to reformat away from a quote to keep it (sorta) easy to update.

...

Cleaning out the office and letting more people know of the decision has been bittersweet. Folks have continued with the congratulations and the I wish I was in your shoes! I will certainly miss the people, ...
Same here!
I said my goodbyes today starting on the 5th floor and working my way down. Most people said I would be back as a consultant sooner or later. It has not yet sunk in that I don't have to go back, ever. After 35 years of continual empl*yment, it is an adjustment that I have been looking forward to. Congratulations!

There's my answer :D. Congratulations, gsparks2!

REattempt - Thanks for sharing your thought processes. It's better to feel pretty sure within yourself before making the leap. Keep us posted and we look forward to seeing you on a "class of" thread real soon.

p.s. I am getting closer too, and I am experiencing many of the same feelings/emotions. I think they are quite normal, and I'm sure there are many on the forum who could comment from experience.
Completely normal, do a search here on 'just one more year syndrome' - an instructive read, I read it several times. I think it may even be a sticky.

Thanks, Midpack, REWahoo, and Alan - that's an excellent thread. I just read it, hadn't seen it before. I'm glad it was made "sticky".

I am not having any second thoughts about RE, I am sure it will happen on schedule. Hey, one big benefit of staring at this thread and our list as it evolves is that it reinforces you and keeps your attitude on track! ;)

I'm fortunate in that I will have a COLA'd pension and health insurance, and that makes things much easier. I think maybe what the deal is is a simple feeling of peering at the "unknown". Work really regimentalizes (is that a word?) a person, and you get used to the routine. Getting closer to cutting the cord reminds me of like when you were a kid, and your family moved to an entirely new town and you had to face the first day of school. The good news, of course, is that it always worked out, you found your way, and made some great new friends in the bargain. :D

Like Penthouse Forum..I never thought it would happen to me, but...

No sex here, so no need to hit censor or report buttons!! (see below)

Following up on my musical tribute from Purron, I pulled a few tidbits to celebrate my new freedom.

I'm free-I'm free
And I'm waiting for you to follow me.
The Who – I’m Free

Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today
Is a day of reckoning.
Let the weak be strong, the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay
It’s Independence Day.
Martina McBride – Independence Day

Does the sound of freedom
Echo in your mind
Martina McBride – Where Would You Be

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose,
Nothing don't mean nothing honey if it ain't free, now now.
Janis Joplin – Me & Bobby McGee

Free at last! Free at last.
Thank God Almighty, we are free at last.
Martin Luther King – I Have a Dream

And now, the end is near,
And so I face the final curtain.
My friends, I'll say it clear;
I'll state my case of which I'm certain.

I've lived a life that's full -
I've travelled each and every highway.
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets? I've had a few,
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course -
Each careful step along the byway,
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew,
When I bit off more than I could chew,
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall
And did it my way.

I've loved, I've laughed and cried,
I've had my fill - my share of losing.
But now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that,
And may I say, not in a shy way -
Oh no. Oh no, not me.
I did it my way.

For what is a man? What has he got?
If not himself - Then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way.

Yes, it was my way.
Frank Sinatra – My Way

What a day this been, what a knuckle head I've been...

Well, it all was going so smashingly... I did my out processing and was headed to my lunch - as the theme for the lunch was "He rides off to the next adventure", I had ridden my Harley in that day. Saw a fellow rider in the lobby on the way out and he says, "Don't wreck your bike on your last day on the way to your lunch." I never thought those words would turn out to be so prophetic..

To make a long story short: paramedics, a ride to the ER, surgery and now a cast and a walker. Broke and dislocated my ankle. The worst part was it was on the way *TO* lunch, so everyone was left hanging for a while. Not quite the type of exit I was anticipating. (I thought the walker would be a least a few years away):(:(

Nonetheless retirement begins and I will be fine once the cast comes off. Most damage to my Baby (Road King Classic) and my pride i.e. sorry for all the trouble I caused for others, especially DW.:flowers::flowers:

Please do Not start your ER (Early Retirement in the ER (Emergency Room)!
:duh::duh::duh::nonono::nonono::nonono:

The :dance:will have to wait a bit.

Nook

That's one heck of a last day Nook.

Glad to hear it was only a broken ankle.

Oh wow, so sorry to hear about the accident. :( But ankles will heal in time, so take care of it - and you now do have the time to do so!

And how is the condition of the other participant - the Harley? I sure hope that's OK.....

Coolius

Good grief Nook, slow down a little (figuratively)! Should give you some time to post initial impressions, but you'll be good as new soon we hope...

Great start Nook! The Harley will probably be fixed before you are. Take it easy with that broken ankle. Stairs and showers will be interesting. And therapy is a great retirement pastime.

Thanks to all for the well wishes. Just convalescing and elevating the ankle. I probably have enough hardware in there to set off the metal detectors in the airport. Hey look on the bright side, I may be able to get a temp Handicapped placard to ease the hobbling! When you are dealt lemons, you might as well make lemonade.

Got to keep the sense of humor. On the bright side, health coverage from Mega Corp doesn't end until today and we already have the new individual coverage. I guess meeting this year's high deductible should not be an issue.

We will deal with the Harley on Monday.

All things in time, and time is now in abundance.

Looks like Nook and Wine are in the near term but Tinker will have to wait.
