The Class of 2014

OK - sign me up for the class of 2014! Probably March 31st.

I'm fallin off the bone done. The BS buckets (plural - they are literally spilling over) are full, MegaCorp has ground out of me almost all vesitages of enthusiasm and others in my age-class at work are clogging up the exit lanes.

For some time DW has been saying I am a different person on Saturday afternoons than I am on a workday. Could use another year of savings in the bank, but how much is your happiness (and your spouses) worth? Just can't wait until everyday is Saturday!

Okay I am now into my final year starting tomorrow. So on Oct 1, 2014 I will be free to do what I want. 365 calendar days, 254 works days--not that I am counting :) So one year from today I will be celebrating big time. Wow it doesn't seem real yet that I am that close now finally. So with each passing day I can now say 'that is the last Halloween, (or Thanksgiving or Any day for that matter) that I have to work' Awesome!

Congrats hakuna! The next year will fly by. I started a workhour spreadsheet when my final year started, where I agreed to work 960 hrs in the next year. I start my final 6 months tomorrow. I've got 469 hrs to go. It's great to see some progress in getting to the end zone.

Some advice from the Senior Class? I am officially in the class of 2015 (Jan) and have been wondering what those of you with more experience have done with life insurance in your last year of working. It seems a waste to me as I have always thought of life insurance as protection against losing earning potential. So I should only need 1 year at the most, right? What have you all done (or are you planning to do) in your last year?

Plan A was to phase it out shortly after retiring. Plan B came into play when we refinanced the mortgage and decided to let it go to term because of the low rate. We'll keep the term policy almost to its full term.

The 90 day clock has probably started for some of you, and I have a little suggestion that might brighten your days, despite the stench of the BS bucket...

Change your password to something that reminds you of where you are. It might contain the letters FI, for instance, and I don't mean "financially independent" or "forget it", hehe.

Now, every time you execute that bit of BS, you'll grin, and remind yourself that you'll soon be free!

Please add me to the list.

No later than 4/18/2014 no earlier than 1/2/2014. I hope that I can encourage DW to join me so giving it till my exact anniversay with MegaCorp to sell it to her. I will be 66 so hardly ER. I never thought I would do it but am so utterly, painfully bored that even spending savings is preferable. Actually typical annual investment returns exceed our annual expenditures so no big deal. Just too blasted cheap to quit, until now.

Taking it all in baby steps, told my children, non-j*b friends, will advise management later. Hoping for S**tC*n in December. Might as well get the severance if they are willing to cooperate. Will alert management when/if fail to be removed.

My engineer's license came up for renewal and I put it in "inactive". So I guess I am done.

Here is the funny part, I never wanted to quit working. But once I decided to go I wish it were today. This whole business is like doing a night jump. Once you "screw your courage to the sticking place" all you want is to go NOW.

Very happy for you. You probably already feel better having made the commitment.
I am planning a mid year 2014 notice. Just having a plan to give notice is making me feel better.
Let the count down begin.

Add me to the list.

January will begin my next phase in life. I will have some loose ends to close out early in the month, but will be done by the 15th. I have a number of staff that will be going through 2013 perf reviews and I want to be sure they recieve their fair assessments from me. They deserve it!

My challenge now is to stay focused and not be too distracted by thinking about why I didn't do this sooner!

Please add me too!!

I'm outta here 1/1/14. Looking forward to the next phase with my DW.

Want to travel a little (not the cruise or abroad kind), but just see the country. I just asked DW here priorities for planning the trips around an activity.

My list to her to pick from was:

Family/friends
Food/Wine
Shopping
Historical sites
Nature, National Parks etc
Live Music
Festivals

After friends & family, she chose Live Music.. so, off we go to discover new bands and sounds.. hey, we're in Texas.. there's a lot of that close by..
cheers everyone!

Funny you mention that - I did exactly the same thing. When I finally decided to pull the plug, my password became a riff on "liberated". Made me happy every time I typed it in.

The list is getting long...

We (my wife and I) are going in April of 2014. Every April we take vacation and travel to New Orleans for the French Quarter Festival on my wifes B-day. In 2014 she will turn 55 (I am already at 55) while we are at the Festival, and we will not return to work - EVER! Class of 2014 is COOL

Still on track

My date on May 24, 2014 is still solid. I have had some second thoughts, but I'm currently in the middle of annual reviews for employees, which snaps me right back to wanting out. Our review process is a paperwork nightmare, and after doing it 30+ times, I'm completely burnt!!!

7 months and some change, and I'm gone...

Add me to the list! I plan to go into Early Semi-Retirement in January 2014. I'll probably do some part time consulting gigs, but these can be things that I enjoy rather than the daily grind (I'm an exec with a private equity-owned company).

I'm getting through by the fact that although the cell phone countdown says a few days over 200 remaining, only 110 or so are w*rk days. I do have work to do most every day, but on the weekends it's lighter and I can do it on my own schedule.

I did it--turned in my letter today. The day is May 15, 2014. Tomorrow I will tell my students so they hear it from me. In my field, I work with a small group of students mostly on-on-one for their entire college careers, so it is not as though I have 800 whom I'll never see again.
But, joy, joy!

That must be a good feeling. Congratulations. It's all downhill now.
