Very nice picture. Goose lake was my old stomping grounds as a kid growing up. My uncle had a place on the lake and I would spend summers with my cousin there. Great memories.

This recent 4th of July we took a cruise onto San Francisco bay to watch the fireworks from the USS Potomac. Of course it was impossible to take decent fireworks photos from a bobbing ship. However, the best photo opportunities were on the trip out of and into the Oakland estuary.

Just purchased a macro 'legacy' lens for my A7RII, a Kiron 105mm f2.8, made sometime in the early 80's. Got it on ebay for a very good price. I'm really enjoying trying out these older lenses on the mirrorless. First dozen shots produced one good picture, a hoverfy on an oxeye daisy. Handheld macro is tough, with the shallow depth of field and the extreme magnification it's hard to get spot on focus while there's any type of motion.

I like that, hesperus. Nice detail on the wing!

When I moved to the Bay Area, I was told that those cranes at the Port of Oakland (in your first photo) were George Lucas' inspiration for the AT-AT Walkers from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. I later found out, from an interview with George Lucas, that it is a complete myth. However, they certainly do cast foreboding figures over the landscape!

Thanks MT.
The Kiron 105 1:1 lens appears to live up to it's reputation as one of the better (older) manual focus macros. Just so damn hard to get locked onto something. The slightest motion is amplified 50 fold, so you get maybe a split second to make the shot.

Excellent shot, hesperus! How close were you to the bee and still get focus?

New on this forum and glad to see that there's a section for photography. I'm using a Panasonic Lumix G5 (micro 4/3 mirrorless) and have started using Aurora HDR and other software for editing after the fact. Hoping to improve my skills now that I have more time on my hands. Tend to shoot more landscapes and flowers right, but looking to expand my horizons. Planning to join a local camera club next month.

Thanks Ronstar.
I shot this at the minimum focal distance of the lens, about 12".

That is true. I believe he used elephants as a model.

I like your macro, Hesperus. Looks tack sharp at the plane of focus and the colors are striking!
14-yo grandson is just getting into photography with his prime interest being macro so we've been going out lately, doing mostly flowers. I'd like to get him something to get him a little closer than his kit lenses will allow but haven't decided what. (I've done a fair amount of macro over the years so I'm familiar with the various approaches such as ext. tubes, closeup lenses, reversing lens, dedicated macro lens, legacy film lens, etc.) Just need to decide how best to start him out.

A good way to start the day, from the top of Cadillac Mt. in Acadia National Park.
