I'd love to get the Nikon 810, but that may have to wait until the beginning of the year. For now, I think I need something waterproof lol. I got careless and overconfident, deciding I didn't need the camera in the dry bag when I launched the canoe. May pick up a Nikon Aw1 with 10-100 lens for our canoe trips, while I research further. Then if I dump the canoe, I'll just take a few photos while Om under. Going to the 810 will be an expense, however, as Ill need a few lenses as well. The telephoto's shot, the ultra wide zoom is DX, and that just leave my 35-70 full frame lens. But, I wanted to upgrade the body and add prime lenses anyway, so...

A good photo, final or not. I find explaining composition I see is easier with an image than words.

Your image has a strong eye catching subject. Then one sees a classic triangle in the form of yellows and yellow-greens highlights, which also contains a yellow-green area in the water. Then the fore- middle- and background foliage draws the eye around the image. Finally the focus blur combines with darker vs lighter areas to give depth. Well done.

Thanks Seraphim, Sorry for the loss of your D200. I really like your canoe advantage shots. Hope you find something soon. I'm looking at an 810 also - maybe get one in a year or so, but no way I'm bringing it in my kayak.

That train engine is a "Wow!" That would be hanging on my wall in 16x20.
I've been kicking around the idea of a Nikon 810 but will probably wait until I start SS since that will be more or less gravy money. While I haven't added it all up I'm thinking that with all the lenses I'd have to get (mine are all DX) the kit would be near five figures. This is not an impulse buy.

Thanks Walt! I think I'm going to mount it or one of the others I took yesterday.
I know what you mean about the 810. I was thinking of getting the 800 or now 810, but only getting the 14-24 lens and only shoot landscape/vacation photos with it. That would only be around $5k. But realistically, once I go down that path it'll lead to more lenses and it will end up in the five figure amount you speak of. Your right - not an impulse buy - I need to come across an extra $10k somewhere.
Here's another shot from yesterday - These locomotives don't hold up very well outdoors. They're basically scrap. The nice steam locomotives are indoors and tough to photograph due to lighting.

On my list of things to do is another trip to the Baltimore RR museum, about an hour and half away. A couple of years ago we went on a two-day Coal Country Tour and the bus broke down in Clifton Forge, Va which happened to have a small RR museum with a few large pieces. This engine was almost fully restored before the owner found out that CSX railroad wouldn't let him run it on their tracks because those wheels apparently give the track a good pounding, creating a lot of maintenance issues. Dang shame too, it would be neat to see that running. That's me at the engineer's seat. They also have some restored cars, like the dining room car. The photo is of the galley.

If the boiler was fired I wouldn't dare. A friend was deeply interested in steam locomotive history and loaned me some of his books. The internal workings of those machines was a wonder of technology at the time and it really did take an engineer, not just an operator, to run one of them.
They are not simple machines.

Lol. Didn't know we had a lot of trainophiles here lol.
I'm currently researching a lot of Nikon's older fast prime glass. May lose AF functionality, but I can live with that. Could get some sharp lenses at a reasonable price, on top of the cost of the 810.
I'm having withdrawal symptoms ... Starting playing with a little Kodak video recorder. A waterproof one, of course...

Have to check with my homeowners insurance. Used to have a rider for camera gear when I shot on the side. Don't think I ever cancelled it. Don't remember what the deductible was...

That's True! But I can't think of anything photography related that is cheap. Except maybe my remote shutter release for $10
