DW retired from teaching this year. Today is the day teachers report back. We agreed this was the first "real" day of retirement and went and ate lunch at our favorite Mexican place and split a small pitcher of margaritas to celebrate!

Wow.... our schools will not reconvene until August 28th. I always loved that Staples "It's the most wonderful time of the year" commerical and would sing it to my kids as they were about to return to school.

Congrats! That IS a happy day. I thought our schools going back July 31st was early, but damn...you have that beat by a good bit.
I know it's been a few years, but I don't think school started until mid August for me. But of course, they now have a "balanced calendar" where the kiddos get 2 or 3 week long breaks in addition to the Christmas break...we didn't have that many breaks when I was a kid.

Congrats & enjoy. The only schools around here that start in July are reform schools. Ours start the week after labor day ish.

Some states have laws regarding school beginning after labor day (tourism). We are on a modified year-around. Shorter summer, more breaks (9 weeks on, 2 weeks off).

I don't ever recall having to go back to school prior to Labor Day. I thought Labor Day was the official end of summer vacation. Starting school in July is completely foreign to me. I guess things must have changed quite a bit since I last was a student.

As a former band parent, I celebrate August 1st with fanatical joy (and a few hangovers). That's the day when early band practice starts for all those parents who still have kids in high school. It is one of the best days of the year for me!

Are you in Gilbert, AZ? A friend just sent her kids back to school this week.
My sister isn't feeling retired quite yet... San Diego Unified doesn't start till 8/28... but teachers start sooner than that... She retired in June and says she won't really feel it for a few more weeks.
FWIW on the Labor Day thing... San Diego Unified didn't start till after Labor Day until 2 years ago - now it's starts a week earlier... They tried to do the change with only 6 months warning and parents AND teachers went ballistic - lots of vacation plans threatened... so it was postponed a year.

My son did band for two years. Don't miss sitting in the cold and watching them play the same song in every competition.
