Doesn't explain where the 1 out of 3 conclusion came from. I recently read the same number in the WSJ. I am not comfortable with it either. Be nice to know more about how it was arrived at and exactly what fell into the definition of abuse.

I'm a closet militant feminist. No really, my mom was very active in NOW (Los Angeles chapter president?) I marched for the ERA (as a 6 year old ) . My favorite artist is Tori Amos (my daughter's name is Victoria and I call here Tori for short!). I was Wiccan for a while. So you can see why I have problems being affiliated with any party/movement/etc. because my views are all over the board, politically. It's great because I have a pretty positive sense of self, but sometimes I wish I had a candidate I wanted to vote for. :-/

I'll see if I can come up with some methodology on this number, may take me some time to go through my dusty spriral bound notebooks. I can tell you that some "extrapolation" is done due to estimates of underreporting, so no one has an exact percentage. But even if this was a ten fold exxageration, it's still far too many. I'll post it under other topics since this isn't the appropriate thread, sorry for the hijacking!

Re: Where would you like to go?
Laurence, you don't have to do my homework.
After hearing your backround, I have decided I will adopt you--you would make a fine son. Hey, I get an immediate grandchild too.

Re: Where would you like to go?
I think Laurence is a conservative lesbian trapped in a mans body
As with any stats, this one is highly manipulatable. I think a lot of disgusting funny business DOES go on, but its impossible to measure.
For example, in this case 'unwanted touching' or showing of a variety of pornographic or other undesireable 'material' counts as abuse. Now...what is 'unwanted touching'...is it lingering over a diaper change? Whats pornography? Does holding a 3 month old baby while watching an R rated movie count?
Depends on who is doing the stat collecting, who spins the results, and which organization stands to get higher membership and higher donations by pushing the envelope a little.
There are weirdo's everywhere, but as Laurence suggests the problem here was not a few 'bad priests', but how the church handled the situation. With enron and worldcom, you can sort of expect a coverup. Not here.

Re: Where would you like to go?
I've been acused of being a male lesbian before! I hope you are right TH. We can only make sure we do a good job protecting our own children, not just with locked doors but with love and an understanding of their own self worth and the confidence to be an advocate for themselves when Mom and Dad aren't around. Think globally, act locally?

Re: Where would you like to go?
oooh! But also, if we see a child we suspect of being abused, speak out! I know it must be difficult, but too many people turn a blind eye. O.K., I'm stopping now. What was this thread about?

Re: Where would you like to go?
I've 'discovered' abuse twice. My knuckles hurt for about a week afterwards, but it was worth it.
Seems like thread hijacking is a way of life around here. Maybe Ben is right and we dont need all these fori, just one long thread...

I think my husband looks more like a young Mel Gibson.

I saw that pic of C-T before, when he posted it a few months back, and my first thought then was that he did have "Mel Gibson eyes"--very blue with thick lashes, really nice!
My best friend was a big fan of Mel Gibson, but I think she rated his eyes as only his second-best feature; she liked his behind the best. (Please, no photo postings of posteriors are being solicited.)

One of my better features actually, but since I don't
know how to post a photo, y'all will have to use your imagination. I think it must be impressive because

I am glad you are out of your funk. That was hilarious and I really was laughing out loud, which is something I don't do enough! Thank you.

I have not thought much about traveling. If I have unlimited budget, I would like to visit the places featured in the "Amazing Race" TV show.
