Investment money increase / Haircuts

This is an additional post (new investment idea) related to cutting my own hair and so can you!

Haircutting might be an art but the basics are not difficult. YouTube is your friend and lots of good info here at ER with links too.

As far as investing, thought about it, every time I cut my hair an equal amount of money, as the price of a professional haircut, is manually transferred from bank account to Roth IRA account. Due to this being my third self-haircut, $75 (3×$25) was put to Roth IRA account. The first 2 were paying back the Wahl Razor from Costco but had the money so transferred it.

Thank you IRS for adding $500 to our Roth IRA max for 2023

This is NOT financial advice and I am NOT a financial advisor. Please make your own decisions.

I thought our haircuts pre 2020 were super cheap. 2020 and 2021 I cut DH’s hair and my bangs and let the rest of my hair grow out. I got quite good at cutting DH’s hair with scissors and clippers, but I didn’t enjoy it. Late 2021 we returned to the hairdressers. I was very happy to give them that job back and now the prices seem to be where they should be so I’m not unhappy. I do my own bangs in between cuts now so I don’t go as often as before Covid.

I’m retired, not in accumulation phase so I’m sure that makes all the difference.

The young wife has been cutting my hair since the big Covid Lockdown of 2020. After having watched many YouTube videos, she's really good at it. At the $20 per visit (usually every 3 to 4 weeks) I was paying the barber in very early 2020 (I'm sure the price has risen since), we recovered the cost of the clippers before the year was out, and it has been pure savings ever since.

She still goes to the salon. But she has really beautiful long, silky, shiny hair, and I wouldn't trust it to me either.

Good idea not cutting/styling your wife's hair. Feel like it's a lose lose. Either it's done correctly, as expected, or it's not correct and {insert emoji with hands raised in question}.

The barber/stylist up the street charges $20 here and left $5 tip = $25.

Bad haircuts and cheap clothes are no way to go through life.

Just kidding.

While I think it's a cool idea to save some $ by cutting your own hair, unfortunately a lot of us older folks don't even have much (or any) hair anymore (looking at myself in the mirror ). So, I would argue that getting a hair cut is a luxury that one should enjoy when one is still young and have hair.

Speaking for myself, I would happily pay someone to cut my hair if only I can get some of my old hair back

A close family member seriously jokes that he saved a lot of time and money losing his hair in his early 20's.

Enjoy what you've got and have as many positive days as possible.

I still choose to go to the barber. Spending $25 4 times a year is fine with me. I am just happy it still grows fast and thick enough to require cutting .

I like the local barbershop and they appreciate the business. I do not rule out my vanity as a reason to visit, as most of the barbers are female and they give me nice compliments .

My haircuts are a once a month social event. I've been going to the same barber at the same one-man shop for just under 50 years. Some other long time customers are usually there at the same time (planned). I enjoy grabbing a beer or two from the fridge, yakking with the other geezer guys and hearing some new corny jokes. Well worth the $20 for the haircut.

DW cut my hair during COVID. She was the first one to call the barber to check to see when he'd be opening again!

Winter of 2022, I got a haircut in LaBelle, Flaorida while snowbirding. The barber was very active in town affairs and president of the Chamber of Commerce. Listening to him tell me about the town and it's activities and history was very, very interesting. But I never told DW that he was more interesting to listen to than her when she was cutting my hair!

I buzz my hair to 1/16" so I do it every 3 weeks. At $25 each(crazy) for 17 haircuts per year that is $425. I would say a $30 clipper is a good investment. I will save thousands and that is not counting tips or the gas to get there. Easy decision for me since I am not a millionaire like most of you.

I have been cutting my DH's hair since Covid. Lately, he has not wanted me to cut his hair, because he is afraid that he is losing his hair on top. I asked him a couple of times if he wanted me to cut it and he said no, so I quit asking. It was really looking awful. Finally, yesterday he said that he couldn't stand it any longer and asked me to cut it then, which I happily did.

My son was over Friday and I asked him where he gets his hair cut? I knew that it was very close. He said that he is thinking about going somewhere else, because it was getting pricy. He said that it was $45.00 per cut. I was shocked.

I get my hair cut at Supercuts once or twice a year. Honestly if I can't afford that then I'd either just let it grow or else find some other way to save money.

I used to cut my own hair when I was working, but age and arthritis are telling me that would be unreasonable at this point in life.

Buzzing my own now and looks as good as some I've paid for from from the front. -Not so sure about the back. Sticking with 3 on top and 2 on sides. It's cheap and easy and looks as good or better than other alternatives.

I was getting a $60 cut w/tip every six weeks plus the occasional upsell of products. I bought clippers during COVID after my hair starting touching my shoulders. I taught myself through Youtube videos and get enough unprovoked compliments that I'm going to continue on with my routine for the time being. $500+ a year savings is about where I start thinking it's worth the saving vs convenience. We've made a pretty good dent in reducing convenience spends and knocking a few thousand off the annual expenses starts to make a decent difference in end number savings goals.

Henry's barbershop since the early 1990's. Sportsman's hangout. When he is not cutting hair during the day, he is driving a school bus for the Township.

Everyone in town knows Henry. He's 68 now and won't quit!

Oh, $20. And you can make an appointment until 11:00 PM.

SuperCuts here offers $9.95 cuts in December. Can purchase as many as you want (gift card). I've used it for many years. I'm pretty frugal, but not worth the hassle for $10.

That’s what ours used to cost before 2020. No longer.
