R.E. - Status Update
OK so I've planned and now I'm executing.
My plan is to stop working by April 2006.
The house has been on the market and I'm working through the negociation process.
If they meet my price I'll be living in an apartment for awhile.
More importantly, I will be taking an active step on the path to R.E. realization.
A scary time - moving from thinking and planning to action.
You need a dream and a plan and "Ya gotta believe".

Best of luck to you. What are you going to do one you stop working?

Re: R.E. - Status Update
Thanks Caroline.
I'm mulling over asking Dory if I could have a section of my own for awhile where I could post my first hand experience of RE - thought process, hopes/fears, money planning and experiences etc.; others could chime in on the topic.

That sounds like a great thread/board. It would be nice to see some real-life examples of the trials and tribulations of someone who recently RE'd.

Why depend on Dory or anyone else for that matter to do something you want to do? Just start your own blog and provide a link here for those that are interested.

Dex, my husband retires in less than 30 work days (mid October). Understand completely about what you are feeling. Just have to take a leap of faith it will all work out for the best.

Re: R.E. - Status Update
dex, congrats on your approaching retirement. I think the writing-as-you-go idea is a great one, as is starting a blog. A blog-style would be more conducive to periodic articles with attached discussions as opposed to a message board where threads reorder and take on lives of their own.
We've had a few cross the border from ER-hopeful to ER, and more are to come. Maybe we can start something here. Uh-oh, my gears are starting to turn again...

My thought of posting here would be I would start a topic and others could chime in. It would be a way for others to add their insights on a specific topic. The posts topics would be a bit structured and in a way linear. For example,
Personal history and how it shaped who I am
What motivated me to RE
Finances - current allocation etc
Final Days at work
Plans for RE
Reality Vs Plans for RE - all topics
Just somthing I'm thinking about.

Re: R.E. - Status Update
Yes, Dex, I agree. I would eagerly read either thread or blog. Threads tend to wander off, as BMJ said. But blogs take more effort to keep up - you don't want it to feel like w@$k or turn into a j@$.

Re: R.E. - Status Update
I've made the decision to retire end of April 2006 as well. Will mean packing up from USA and heading back to Calgary, Canada.
Was thinking about dex posting his thoughts as he wound down and realized that I'd never have time to do that. There will be an awful lot to do making that transition and for awhile at least will be extremely busy with all the arrangements. Kind of the calm before the storm for the time being.
