Re: What does Generation X want?

Dave... working at a bank we get the same as the Fed... there are more days than you think between Jan 2 and end of Nov...

Jan MLK
Feb Presidents'
May Memorial
July Independence
Sept Labor
Oct Columbus
Nov Veterans
Nov Thanksgiving

Now, your company might not give you these days, but they are Federal holidays.

Let's look at the ol' calendar here for U.S. national holidays... MLK Day on 16 Jan, President's Day on 20 Feb, Memorial Day on 29 May, Independence Day on 3 July, Labor Day on 4 Sep, Columbus Day on 9 Oct... what country are you referring to? What old-fart Boomer teacher taught you how to count?

What silly name would be appropriate for this demostration of counting ability? Or the credibility of your other claims?

OK, gosh, Dave, I have to admit that you've won this pissing contest too.

And your credibility speaks for itself!

Re: What does Generation X want?

Due to my stupid f%#*ing the vagaries of my schedule, I get no holidays off except Christmas if it's a scheduled workday. I do, however, get holiday pay.

Re: What does Generation X want?

I find that my GenX children and friends have about the same combination of idealism, cynicism, zeal to work hard, and desire to slack off that I did at their age (and that my father said he did at that age!). They're idealistic about what they want to do, cynical about the nature of large organizations and the behavior of people in them, excited by solving meaty problems, and bored by tedium.

No, I didnt focus my kids' education on feeling ripped off by taxes* :. But I strongly encouraged them to find enjoyable work coz they'd likely be doing it for 2-3 decades.

BTW I think the Baby Boom began in 1946--the first Boomers are turning 60 this year, right?

Speaking as a Canadian that has worked for a large company in the U.S., Dave is right. I can remember getting no holidays between New Year's Day and Memorial Day (which is a pretty long stretch for someone that's used to their holidays )

In Alberta, we get the following paid holidays: New Year's Day, Alberta Family Day (Feb. 20), Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, Christmas and Boxing Day. Man, I love Canada.

Re: What does Generation X want?

My last 2 companies gave 9 days off for holidays and two more "floating" days. We did not get any holidays from New Years to Memorial day. That is what the two floating days were for. These were big mega corps. companies and not Federal or other gov.

Most of the other folks I know in the industry have about the same holiday days off.

Re: What does Generation X want?

We have 9 paid holidays, 2 floating holidays, 1 week Xmas/New year shutdown (with pay). It's very attractive. Soon this will become history (just like our previous bonuses) after the merger with Boston Scientific or whoever.

Howard,

Yes, I am still with Guidant. I heard that Boston Scientific does not pay well - wonder that will affect our pay.
