What is your level of stress at work?
For purposes of this poll, level 10 is the highest possible level of stress, and level 0 is the lowest possible level of stress or no stress at all.
It seems to me that the desire to retire is probably related to the level of stress that one feels related to their work. In other words, if your work involves a very high level of stress, you probably have a stronger incentive to retire, versus someone who experiences a low level of stress at work. Therefore, I am curious to see the correlation of work stress levels to those who participate on this forum.
EDIT: If you no longer work, please indicate the level of stress that you experienced before you retired.

Re: What is your level of stress at work?
it hugely depends on the time of year (which greatly influences the workload) & how many people are having a sh!tf!t about stuff that's really not worth of such hystrionics.
at the moment though, stress is about a 9. I am seriously considering leaving, because the combination of workload, bs, reshuffling of people, & people getting promoted that totally don't deserve it (whilte I get a crap raise, compared to what I deserve) is just a wee bit too much.
which is a shame, because the company has some totally awesome points to it (& I have some amazing coworkers), & when I actually get to sit & DO MY WORK, I love it.

Re: What is your level of stress at work?
What about those that have retired due to the high level of stress they had while employed. Can they be added to the poll?

Re: What is your level of stress at work?
My stress level was 0 for most of my 27 years (programming in aerospace and
later finance), with a very rare spike up to 5 or so. 6 months before I retired
it ramped up to 10 in several steps. This caused me to retire 18 months before
my original plan, and made the decision to do so very easy.

Re: What is your level of stress at work?
My stress level spikes sometimes. It is typically low or at least in the lower half.
If this survey was measuring frustration (which I believe is a little different), I would register higher
I will make a subtle distinction... but I would agree the two are linked.
Stress - a little more fear or uncertainty based
Frustration - disgusted, annoyed, etc...

I think that the individual determines how much stress is at work - not the job. Eliminating stress in all areas of my life is a major priority for me - it is tough!

I work for a startup company and we were all friends prior to this, so my stress level is almost non existant.

Re: What is your level of stress at work?
I think it's very hard to understand the level of stress brought on by work until you quit working. I know I dramatically underestimated the level of stress work was causing in my life prior to retirement.

I've been very lucky with the bosses I've had but I spoke with someone today who had a toxic (mentally ill) boss. Much of what you say is true but sometimes there are outside factors that can make life a living hell.
I strive to be at a 5 on this scale. Too much stress is horrible, but boredom is bad too.

Where does crying in front of the computer every day this week fit with this poll?
I voted 9-10 and yes, I want to retire so bad I can taste it.

Re: What is your level of stress at work?
Most of my stress (real or imagined) comes from my perceived job security, especially since I am the sole income earner in my family. I am lucky in that the company I work for is very laid-back (at least in my department).

Re: What is your level of stress at work?
As mention earlier, I think a lot of stress is brought upon themselves. To me high level's of stress is when you could loose your life's saving if a job or task isn't completed on time. Or your job not being completed ontime or done right can result in someone else loosing there job as well as yours.Or even worse someone can get seriously hurt, or even die if the job isn't done properly. Now add all those up together in the course of a day.

And that is why I voted a 9-10. That's pretty much my job in a nutshell. If we screw up someone could end up assaulted, raped, hostage, or dead. That's also why Corrections Professionals are always in the top three for alcohol abuse, domestic violence, divorce, suicide and dying early in their retirements in pretty much any statistical analysis I've ever seen. Heck, the average life expectancy in my own agency is only 59 years old.
And it might have something to do with why we are often perceived by our spouses and families to be cold, indifferent, callous, and controlling. But hey,,,,
ONLY 16 MORE MONTHS!!!

Re: What is your level of stress at work?
I voted "0", because while I was still employed, I had NO j*b stress at all. I had my own office/laboratory (which was "my space")....very few dared to enter my lair! I was left to my own devices, and as long as the necessary stuff was done, I was left alone!
So stress played absolutely no role in my decision to ER. What caused me to bail out early was all of the namby-pamby BS that was always going on, the absolute lack any intelligent leadership by management, and their inability to make even the tiniest of decisions with any amount of logic or reason. Anyone in management there, could have been replaced by a bucket of feces, and it would have been a vast improvement, although a complete waste of a perfectly good bucket.
But, no, not any actual stress.

Re: What is your level of stress at work?
After spending two years in a job where every morning I would be greeted with at least 5 voice mail messages from hysterical clients accusing me of starving their babies (typically because I had to deny/close their benefits after catching them in a verifiable lie), I don't get stressed over helping hash out this year's electronic resource budget. FIRE isn't about stress for us--it's about not being beholden to anyone.

Re: What is your level of stress at work?
There's nothing like a run with Cancer to put things in perspective. I used to be a stresser. No more. Nothing is THAT important. I do what I can, and what I can't do, well, the world continues to turn without it. 1-2, for the occasions when I let someone get me annoyed or frustrated.

Re: What is your level of stress at work?
Right now I put 3-4 on average. Self-employed project work, at home office most of the time, across a few contracts so financial security is not an issue. Highest spike would be 7-8 which happens maybe every other month when a couple of contracts have key deadlines the same week.
I've been in jobs with a 5-6 average due to heavy workload and understaffing. Never anything averaging higher than that. I'm in business, it's not life and death.

I just started working with a friend (OK, more like a fellow party goer/wingman) on projects at school. I guess I didn't know him that well. He's turning out to be a real jerk off as soon as work starts. I don't mind people who are driven and dedicated, but I do mind people who are condescending because it adds a whole layer of stress that detracts from the work.
