Curious about closing threads

I was involved in a couple of threads earlier today that got closed. While I agree there were some snotty remarks in them, they didn't really seem that bad to me. Certainly not as bad as some that were allowed to die a natural death. I could understand maybe moving them from where they were (one in FIRE and Money, not sure about the other) to Soapbox, but instead they were closed.

Is there a line in the sand or some sort of subjective determination for these things, or is it just a matter of one of the moderators getting annoyed? And I'm not putting y'all down, mods, I appreciate the efforts you put in. I'm just trying to understand so I don't step on anyone's toes. I'd appreciate it if anybody would explain. Thanks.

Harley

Harley, I would refer you to http://www.early-retirement.org/?page=rules , which not only lists the Community Rules but also the moderation philosophy which we try to follow!! Thanks for understanding that what we are doing is part of our job as moderators.

That was an excellent explanation. Thanks very much.

I never saw these rules before. I read the FAQ when I joined, but didn't see them. I just found them at the bottom of the page. I don't think I ever paged all the way down before.

Anyway, thanks again. I will endevour to live within the rules from this point forward. I have a personal issue with sarcasm, but I'll try to reign it in.
