Tomorrow we are going to begin sending out a weekly e-newsletter with links to some interesting forum topics and newsy bits. The newsletter will go out to forum members. If you find that you aren't interested you can unsubscribe from the newsletter by clicking on the link at the bottom of issue 1.

Unsubscribing from the newsletter will not affect your regular forum subscription notices

Just as an FYI - The newsletter is built by pulling from the most popular discussions of the week. So if you are here every day already, you might not find much value in it.

The idea behind the newsletter is to remind members who might not visit on a regular basis that there are some great discussions going on. If course one of the popular topics this week was on Viagra so I'm not sure what that says about us.

We have found these newsletters to increase vibrancy of the forums we send them out to (ie. more people posting).

If you want to opt-out there is a link in the footer or you can go to the User CP >> Options and uncheck the "Receive Email from Our Community" box.

This is one of the most useful on-line groups I have ever been a member of in my time on the Internet. Heck, the peanut butter tip has saved me hours of frustrating effort trying to get that darn glue off my wood floors.

I come to this forum several times a day as part of my routine, and I have done this for years. In my case, I don't need reminders of interesting active threads - - I've probably already found them and posted in them.

So, I am grateful to read that unchecking the "Receive Email from Our Community" box under User CP >> Options, will eliminate these reminders. I already had it unchecked.

This use of the work "peak" was hilarious imo, in the newsletter email I just received:

"For The Forum Men.... Viagra?

OMG, the topics we discuss on E-R.org. You know you need to take a peak and see what the responses are?!?!"

Concerning unsubscribing, the link for unsubscribing didn't fit in the email itself because gmail clipped it. That could be a problem (GDPR compliance?). Some readers will not see it, so they'll mark it as spam instead. I see some reference to unsubscribing in gmail's list of emails, but not when I open it.

You might consider a list-unsubscribe header.

When unsubscribing, it's not clear whether you can unsubscribe just from the newsletter. That is, the message says: "If you wish to unsubscribe from ALL future emails from Social Knowledge, LLC, click the "Unsubscribe Now" button below."

That implies that I won't get notification of private messages, for example, which is something I want.

Note that I'm not criticizing the idea of the newsletter or what's in it. I think it's a fine idea.

Last night I realized something: I didn't opt-in for that newsletter. GDPR has strict requirements about having end-users give permission for you to send them newsletters.

1) We need to update the text because the unsubscribe link is just for the newsletter, not all emails. We are looking into how to update that text with our email provider.

4) When folks sign up they are able to opt-in/out of the communications. So we feel it's compliant with GDPR. We are monitoring GDPR to see how things go with that initiative. We do not have offices or employees in Europe so we are still reluctant that they have jurisdiction over us. That being said, we have never shared information with a 3rd party in our existence. Our privacy policy states we can if members opt-in but we have never allowed members to opt-in so everyone is opted out by default. We don't do sketchy stuff. Even the way we close accounts in the past would past muster with these new laws (ie. remove all personally identifiable information). It was nice to meet and talk about this and realized we were already compliant. As people test the laws the grey areas will become more black/white and we will know if we need to make any more adjustments.

So what's your newsletter? How can I sign up?

Is there some way to send the summary newsletter only if I have not logged in for a few days? Normally I check every day or so but when traveling skip many days.

Is there a location where we can find the newsletters on demand? Rather than getting them by email? If they have ads in them I will probably unsubscribe abut eould like the option to check them out periodically.

Yes, I'd like to be able to see the newsletter if I've been gone a few days, but don't want it in my inbox. I've already got that option off on my CP settings.

I do think that it will take years to sort out the GDPR regulations.

That's okay, they approved when they signed up so we are in compliance. If they don't want an email, it's one click away. If they have more issues than that they can contact us and we would be happy to work with them to resolve their issues.

I'm a member & I don't think I've gotten the newsletter. Do you have to sign up? And I like the idea of having it available on your website in case you miss the email.

I've been spending a lot of time on this site lately so I might not see much that's new, but I think it's a great idea.
