At the moment, when I display any forum thread, the "still loading" spinner spins for ever, and the status at the bottom of the page says "Transferring data from ping.westley.crowdscience.com...".

Sounds like you are having trouble reaching the ping.westley.crowdscience.com website.
What happens when you ping it? Type "ping ping.westley.crowdscience.com" without the quotes at a dos prompt.
Also try "tracert ping.westley.crowdscience.com" without the quotes.

Those are fine. If I were having trouble reaching it, I'd expect the data transfer to time out. It seems more likely to be an incredibly slow Web server. (It doesn't help clarity that the forum page is trying to contact a server with "ping" in its name...)
