Almonds vs. Peanuts

Recent health reports concerning nuts usually choose almonds as the poster boys for healthy snacking. I like almonds fine, especially when roasted in the toaster oven. However, I like peanuts better, they're cheaper than almonds, and I haven't seen anything that states that almonds are superior to peanuts.

Info?

Technically, peanuts aren't nuts, but they're pretty good for you.

Spouse has been microwaving soybeans in the pod and shelling them to eat as a snack. I'm not sure that I'm ready to make that disgustingly healthy leap yet...

You ever tried the wasabi crunchy soybeans? Good stuff.

I like edamame too...but preferably with a little butter, salt and pepper. I sneak them past my wife as lima beans every once in a while but she was wise to me the last time.

I can not answer this question; it is an extremely controversial and divisive topic.

To paraphrase Rodney King. "Why can't we just get along - the almonds and peanuts together."

You made me look up edamame. And yesterday you made me look up ramekin. Ack!

I love legumes and nuts. I have had soybeans in the pod when I was in California and liked them. I don't see them around here.

Last time we trekked to Hawaii we were introduced to edamame, and the wasabi. We liked them, and recommend them for use as a (fairly) healthy snack. Just suck them out of the pod and dip in wasabi. We've bought some wasabi in the tube. Good stuff.

Re: Almonds vs. Peanuts

based on both the what did you spend in 2006 thread & wednesday's weigh ins i've been tracking my supermarket purchases by item this month. thought this would give me a better handle on both the cash i dole out and calorie intake. so far this month i've spent $22.31 on nuts. what can i say: you are what you eat.

"if you are what you eat, then i'm going to be you by morning."~~gay saying

ps edamame is excellent steamed or boiled and salted. great way to get sodium back in the system after a day of biking in the south florida sun. i'm gonna try with wasabi, that's sounds really good too.

Almonds are WAY better for you than peanuts. Peanuts are atherogenic
(I think that's the correct term, they clog your arteries) and if they have
that fungus on them they can promote liver cancer. Almonds are really
really good for you. I switched to almond butter instead of peanut butter
years ago. Tastes better (to me) too. Only downside is that it's WAY
more expensive.

The statement was too sweeping; low temperature roasting is not a problem.

Roasting brings out the flavor of the nuts, and develops their sweetness. It is safe to roast nuts if done at a low temperature-typically a 160-170 degree Fahrenheit oven (at higher temperatures than this, research clearly shows damage to nuts' delicate fats) for 15-20 minutes will do the trick. Place nuts on a cookie sheet in a single layer. To enhance the "roasted" flavor, try putting a little Bragg's Liquid Aminos or soy sauce into a spray bottle and misting the nuts before roasting.

Avoid Commercially Roasted Nuts

Roasting nuts at a temperature higher than 170F will cause a breakdown of their fats and the production of free radicals. When nuts roasted at the high temperatures used commercially are consumed, the free radicals they contain can cause lipid peroxidation-the oxidizing of fats in your bloodstream that can trigger tiny injuries in artery walls-a first step in the build up of plaque and cardiovascular disease.
-------------------------------------------------
The same is true of olive oil; best used raw/unrefined.

Re: Almonds vs. Peanuts

Thanks, Kahn. I love roasted almonds and pecans and hazelnuts. I'll try the low temperature roasting method. Trader Joe sells raw nuts cheap, so it won't be difficult to switch.

Where do you buy almond butter?

Can you point to some data that backs that assertion?

I didn't find any after a quick google, but I did find this:

blurb

Three diets high in monounsaturated fats from either olive oil, peanut oil, or peanuts and peanut butter had the same favorable effects on low density lipoproteins (LDLs, the "bad" cholesterol) as a low-fat diet in a laboratory study led by a Penn State researcher.

I think you should be eating your almonds encased in chocolate!

Heh, my older daughter practically lives on these. We had to shell the ^$$@$@! things for her until I found the shelled ones in the freezer case.

If so, that's a bummer. I'll have to try the low temp roasting. The way I do it is set the toaster oven on high, put in a layer, and watch to get them almost to the point of burning.

You should also keep all nuts and oils refridgerated to keep them from spoiling.
