Epsom Salt

Am only posting because of what I found on the internet regarding the use of epsom salt. Don't know whether this is funny or just odd.

DW has a mild infection in her big toe. AHA!!. I know what to do! Digging through the medicine cabinet, I find the epsom salt... On the container, it says "use for occasional constipation" and for "sprains and bruises".

So I look on the intenet for the correct way of soaking... "epsom salt and infection". The first site that comes up contains this warning.

Quote:
Magnesium sulfate, better known as Epsom salts, is a chemical compound made up of magnesium, oxygen and sulfur. Epsom salts chemical makeup is highly absorbent and draws toxins from whatever surface it encounters, including human skin, which makes it popular for use as a bath salt. Soaking in Epsom salts is also a widely used remedy to treat infections. Epsom salts work well to treat outer infections but should not be ingested. Consumption of Epsom salts can result in magnesium overdose, which can lead to death.

Growing up that was a very popular choice for sprain in our house. Mother turned to it often for use on us.

Same here, that's the only use I have ever heard for it but I suppose there are others.

Many uses. Including fertilizers for tomatoes and lawns. Also mix with water and dish soap it makes a natural herbicide.

dish soap alone is a natural herbicide unless dish soap is not natural, then it's just a herbicide and antibacterial and anti-dirt, too.

3/4 tsp added to the mash in every 5 gallon batch of beer I make. I think this is mainly for yeast health.

When growing up, the only use I knew about was as a laxative. Whatever differences we had in our family, bathroom humor was the one thing we all had in common. The mere mention of epsom salts was always good for a guaranteed chuckle.

I just used Epson salts for the first time Sunday night. I had some dry skin on my feet and the dry skin made it uncomfortable to walk on the hardwood floors. I googled it and found a suggestion for soaking feet in Epson salt water for 30 minutes, use a pumice stone (I used a foot scraper) and then slather on Vaseline and wear socks to bed. It did help. I was very careful not to use the scraper very much. I am going to wait about a week and do it again. I think I am going to go get a pumice stone.

Saves many lives each year when given intravenously to women with pre-eclampsia. A nasty condition that includes high blood pressure that develops in pregnancy.
