I just came across this: The Freelancer's union claims to offer it's members (of which anyone can seemingly become one) access to insurance. I took a look at the website and was quoted $135 or so for a $5k deductible HDHDP plan, which is about 50% more than I'm paying now for similar coverage, but if I had preexisting conditions and they let me in, that might be a great deal. (I'm in my high 30's). I haven't looked too carefully at what exclusions might apply though...

It's only insurance in New York State, from what I've read.

Is there any law preventing someone from forming an organization solely for the purpose of pooling resouces for health insurance? Sort of like a credit union for insurance. It seems like it would have to be cheaper than buying it on the open market.

Believe so. Even if it could be done legally, the group would be subject to what the insurance industry calls adverse selection. Such groups would primarily attract people that really need insurance (the sick). If any insurance company would participate, the premiums would be sky high.
