I did WW (without a group) about 8 or 9 years ago. I bought a "points" book/package thru E-Bay and learned everything I needed to learn for their program. At that time, I weighed 193#...I lost 43 pounds using that method. I have been able to keep most of it off over the years, but began slipping again this past year. It's a good system...but you really don't need the group setting if you don't want it or don't want to pay for it.

I'm a results oriented person therfore if I don't see results soon I loose all interest, asking me to be patient is like asking me to watch a flower grow, it's not happening. As for soda's I drink diet coke and please don't ask me to stop since I don't smoke, give me at least that pleasure.

Note:
Yes there are things that I do take my time with but believe me, I still see instant results.

There have been studies that indicate that people who drink diet soda might eat more, presumably because it stimulates the taste buds and makes the body "think" it is getting calories and gets hungrier when it doesn't actually get those calories.

Too lazy to look up the articles. But, anyhow, I went from drinking soda all day long (70+ oz per day) down to nothing. Has not changed my hunger levels nor my weight at all.

It is hard to argue that diet soda is good for you in any sort of way, but my personal experience is that it doesn't matter for weight loss.

I remember that, too. It was said to still create some of the insulin effect that tells your body to store fuel, which lowers your blood sugar, which makes you tired/hungry again.

If this effect results just from the artificially sweet taste, then it might follow that the least sweet tasting diet soda would produce this effect the least. So for me the fruity ones like diet 7up/sprite/mountain dew are the sweetest, I'd put diet dr pepper in the middle, diet coke and finally least sweet to me always seems to be diet pepsi? you may have your own hierarchy of taste, haha.

Thank you Kronk, if we ever meet I'll buy you a diet soda.

I remember back in college I was taking Organic Chem, and we read an article where a famous scientist (I forget who) had cut open lab rats and inserted a dime (or maybe a nickel) in their abdomens. A bunch of them got cancer, and his conclusions (tongue in cheek) was that dimes cause cancer. My point being, there's an article for everything.

I agree, I've gone with and without diet sodas over the years. Never seen any relationship to hunger or weight gain/loss.

SimpleGirl, good job in getting rid of that post-vacation weight quickly!!

As for me, not so good.

week date D lbs D lbs total
1 Sep 30 - 3.0 - 3.0
2 Oct 07 - 1.2 - 4.2
3 Oct 14 - 4.2 - 8.4
4 Oct 21 +2.2 - 6.2
5 Oct 28 +1.0 - 5.2
6 Nov 04 - 2.4 - 7.6
7 Nov 11 +1.0 - 6.6

I am amazed that I only gained a pound, given the amount of really "sinful" food that I consumed during all the various celebrations surrounding my retirement. Just the brownies at my work party alone were enough to result in a one pound gain, not to mention the rest of the food and then all the Creole/Italian restaurant food that Frank and I put away all last weekend and on Monday.

Now that my daughter's wedding and my ER Day are behind me, I have no excuses! At least not until Thanksgiving, and then there is Christmas... (groan).

Got back to the gym yesterday and plan to go again today. That should help, since I am one of those who tends to eat less after working out.

As for the diet soda discussion, I stopped drinking them so frequently several years ago because Weight Watchers wanted me to drink so much water, and I felt waterlogged. I don't buy them any more, though I might order a diet Coke in a restaurant once or twice a month. Oddly, I don't miss diet sodas now that I don't drink them. And I am saving $$$ by drinking more water, which is probably better for one's health anyway.

W2R...you earned those extra calories and I'm glad you celebrated. After all it's a once in a lifetime achievement that you celebrated this week.

No change here. The weight it exactly as it was last week when I reported. Funny thing though, I weigh every morning right after I get out of bed. All the mornings preceding today were higher (within a pound). I guess Wednesday is a good day to report the "official" weight after all.

My big start with walking has sorta gone by the wayside. If I just do my regular day (sitting around the house) I only do about 2500 steps per day. I really hate exercise.

Definitely not a good week. For some reason, I am going through a ravenous period where I am even more hungry than normal all the time. Like right now despite having a 500 calorie bowl of peanut butter oatmeal, an apple with cottage cheese, and a number of almonds all within the last 3 hours, I'm still hungry enough that it is kind of painful.

Lunch in 45 minutes. Can't wait.

Winter's coming, it's hibernation time. Need to upgrade that fat layer for the long sleep.

Whew! Now this is the kind of result I like to see, at last. This was my first full week of retirement, and I worked out at the gym for over an hour four times since last Wednesday. On the other hand, the week was not entirely virtuous. I really ate too much Italian/Creole restaurant food last weekend (but it was so good! ).

Wow W2R, you did good on your first week of leisure. That's quite a workout schedule you had this past week. Much more than me (as you can tell by my results) I walk, but no gym. I joined the Y last year for a total of 2 months and I didn't like going.

Yesterday I dug out an old DVD that I had, on yoga. The gals in that video were so graceful and then there was ME. It was kinda fun though it made me laugh every time I lost my balance and toppled over.

Anyway...this week's numbers.

happy2bretired, thank you!! You must have done enough exercise because you did very well last week. As you can see from my record, my weight loss tends to be as much of a rollercoaster as the market.

As for the amount of time in the gym, I am not sure how many times a week would be ideal for the length of workout that I like to do. So far, three or four times a week seems about right. It is great to have the time to go to the gym when I feel like it.

I'm still reading this thread even though I'm not posting these days. I suddenly realized I haven't seen laurence for a while. Anybody know what's up with him? I hope we haven't lost another of the good ones.
